If they're not competitive enough then duh they're not worth watching

It's not like they'll take off a show like pizza or enough rope just because there is another american show.... people actually like those shows..

Well obviously the vast majority of Australians disagree with you, since the networks provide what people want to see.

Besides, there is a HUGE amount of Australian content on prime time television, and even some British, so i don't know what youre talking about, or is this just some more anti-american, leftist style racism?
but if we decrease our australian content requirements then that local content will be taken over by more crappy american shows

for every sopranos or six feet under there are too many everybody loves raymond, 8 simple rules for dating my something, my wife and kids or CSI

edit: providing it doesnt affect SBS or ABC, then i suppose it doesn't matter since there aren't really any decent aussie shows on the commerical channels anyway

flood away

dude as much as i hate neighbours and home and away, they are better than the OC and everybody loves raymond

at least they show australians doing relatively australian things

no wonder some people spell mum, "mom" in this country by habit with all the american culture we are exposed to

Seriously i like not enough rope, rove, &... that's all i can think of...

Opening up the television market will be good for what is at the moment a fairly crappy movie industry (people on the inside will tell you it is, don't listen to what the public face of the australian movie industry says...) having to compete with american program will lead to better programs... having to compete with american car companies will lead to better, cheaper cars..

The new monaro looks pretty fugly too....

But the thing is holden will always sell more australian cars, we obviously have different tastes because in america they much prefer the new gto, where as here the new monaro hasn't gotten too much support.

i liked the vy, i don't really like the changes on the vz... but that's my personal thing...

I wanna see what VE looks like, completely different body shape... we've had kinda the same shape since vt.

i thought by australian broadcasting laws each station has to air a certain percentage of australian tv shows to ensure the entertainment industry is alive within aus.

but in the end only shows which will appeal to audiences get aired

Tv stations are required to air a certain amount of Australian material. This can include tv soaps e.g neighbours, Home aND Away, miniseries, movies and sports.

Even if they choose to air shows appealing to the audience they still have to maintain that a certain percentage of Australian material. Otherwise they get fined.

It may not seem like the commercial tv stations air that much Aust material but they usually make up for it in the form of broadcasting sporting events or otherwise showing Aust stuff at different times of the day. You only have to look at channel 10's daytime tv to see that repeats of The Secret Life of Us and White Collar Blue are aired around then. Point being, that there's also no specific time frame within a day that the Aust material must be aired
