ANU is the best university in Australia right? I presume its also the best for Law, if so then is there any particular reason why the enter for ANU law is so low (well its not low, but compared to Monash university which is ranked 5th/6th best in Australia, theres a huge difference)

Why does Monash need 99+ and ANU just 95+

How does it compare to Monash, or any other uni in that matter, in law, and also in terms of future job prospects for law (do employers favour ANU graduates? etc etc)

Supply demand principles, champ.

Directly, the quality of the course has nothing to do with its cut-off score. In a perfect world, the quality of the course should dictate the demand for it, and result in a higher cut-off.

This isn't always the case though.

ANU is in Canberra, outside of Sydney and Melbourne. Also, ANU's 'best uni' ranking is based off its research, so keep that in mind when you're looking at undergrad.

you mean to say the law course is like just, another university...

So should I just stay at melbourne and do law somewhere like Deakin =/

I can't really make comment on the quality of the law course at ANU, because I haven't researched it and don't go there.

Your best bet is to ask around in the law sub-forum here if anyone knows much about the course at ANU/Deakin/Monash or any other uni that you might be considering.

Basically, all uni's specialise in their own different areas. No one particular uni will excel in all areas of studies that it offers. That's where you need to do a bit of reading around and asking, to find out about specific courses and faculties.

Sorry, that's the best advice I can give as im not [yet] in Melbourne.

Not sure how recent this is:

http://www.australian-universities.com/ratings/law-school-rankings/

As has been mentioned, the uni rankings factor in research (although it is not solely based on that), and ANU scores quite high in that field. I was under the impression that Uni of Melbourne is actually #1 in terms of undergraduate study. Employers do have preferences to certain universities, but I wouldn't think it would make a huge difference in a case like ANU vs Monash. Although I should imagine Go8 > Non-Go8 generally. I wouldn't worry about where you go at the end of the day. After a year or so in the workforce it won't really matter.

You can see how students rate their uni at www.rateyouruni.com.au

Monash Law: http://www.rateyouruni.com.au/provider/view/29/fos/19

ANU Law: http://www.rateyouruni.com.au/provider/view/2/fos/19

Overall student ratings (ie. unfiltered results):
Monash= 83.24
ANU= 76.16 (ANU's dropped quite a bit since the last time I checked it was 89.34)

Keep in mind that these ratings continually fluctuate because of student's votes.

Here's a response to ANU over Monash: http://community.boredofstudies.org/showthread.php?t=181068 if you haven't already seen it.

Hey mate,

I do law at a pretty crap uni in brisbane.
To somewhat answer your question, I would have to say, other than what someone else previously mentioned, that is yes some law schools do probably have areas of specialty etc, every law course is basically exactly the same regardless of the institution.
You have to remember that law courses have to be approved by the state's supreme court or something like that, thus they all have to meet the same certain requirement, thus they basically all follow the same structure and so on.

Furthermore, If you can get over the whole prestige crap you'll be better off. The simple fact is, I doesn't really matter where you go, what will determine your success more so (depending on where you want to end up, namely corporate or commercial top tier firms) marks matter more. Studying law is crap also. I would have a good think about it, it's a shit and competitive environment, and in deciding, i would encourage you to read a piece by Duncan Kennedy called 'Law school as training for heirarchy'. type his name into wikipedia and you can download the article from there.

If you do want to do law however. Consider where you want to live, then look at the unis offering law in that city- check each institutions course structure. And particularly look at the electives, because like i said everything - ie contract, torts, property, evidence are the same everywhere.

So...Don't do law, it ruins you. Plus also look at the statistics and research surrounding lawyers and mental health problems.

Do something you enjoy, something that will benifit mankind and man king, like science.

Furthermore studies have shown countries with more law studies than engineering students having slower GDP growth.

Well i hope I've convinced/turned you off studying law

Shit, if i was in your position I'd go live in a kibbutz

God bless

Oh, and yeah... it's just supply and demand

Melb, ANU, and Syd are best... Probably in that order

Though melb no longer offers undergrad

Ultimately to respond to your question, the lower enter for ANU can be explained by accepting Canberra, on the whole, for most, is not a desirable city to live in.

I wonder what Tas' Law Cutoff is?

hahaha the funny thing is i was halfway through an argument, cancelled it when i got distracted and then your post appeared! lol

Okay a few things to explain why people don't find canberra desirable
a) they are scared to move away from home
b) they are under some misconception that canberra looks like this - http://www.touringaustralia.de/RedCentre/imgs/Outback.jpg
c) the last time they were in canberra was a shit excursion when they were 14
d) they are so weak, they 'must' live in melbourne where every high-end store is, otherwise their 'fashion needs' won't be met
e) they let their "friends" influence their decision because they're all going to UTS/Maq

Any excuse (that relates to above) is f**king weak imo - a highly ranked uni, internationally recognised degrees with heaps of government funding is a pretty damn good reason to move and study elsewhere.

And there is nothing to do, that's a pretty big factor. As for your little link, that IS what parts of Canberra look like, only not quite so red. You're a minority, just live with it :)

lol sammy - the only reason why you're bored out of your mind is because its holidays, everyone has gone home and you're procrastinating from doing work :p (can't say much for myself though :p )

UTS law is number 1. everything else is just trying to compete for number 2.

sit down, take a deep breath and ask yourself, do you really want to be part of a cohort that is 2nd best? or are you an individual who only seeks to be number one, thus only wants to be around a cohort who ARE number 1?

if i was you, i would know exactly where i want to do my law degree.

PM me for any further questions.

No, I'm bored during teaching periods as well. Study/work doesn't count, it's not Canberra specific.
