Does anyone know what some of the historians have said about the Dioscuri? it's under myths and legends.......they don't seem to have been very Spartan, otehr than having grown up in Sparta...otherwise mostly worshipped by the Romans

The dioscuri were wroshipped in the Menelaion under a section of the cult that was devoted to Helen. They were important to the Spartans as they represented the bond that should be developed between young men. They also were the deities of sailing, riding and athletics. There are a few reliefs of them in Sparta, in most of them Polydeuces is depicted with a beard.

basically the disoscuri were two brothers, castor and polydeus, who were the brothers of Helen of Troy. They are associated with athletics, horse riding and something else. They were physical human beings but were considered gods. There were considered sparta protectors. They also had shrines and statues erected of them in a santurary in sparta.

to Livingman:
No the spartan kings were decendant from heracles (hercules in Rome)

to XinXin89:
The dioscouri were one of the most common subjects of Spartan art. The 'Heavenly Twins', brothers Castor and Polydeuces, were Spartan princes and the siblings of helen of Troy. One brother was the child of Zeus, like helen, and the other of Tyndareus (sorry i don't know who he is). Only one brother could have the immortality of the gods so, rather than the other die, the twins shared their immortality. The greeks believed the twins were eventually placed among the stars as the Gemini starsign.

The spartans believed the brothers still lived close to Sparta and assisted their former city in time sof danger.

i hope this helps you. :D
