There will be toilets, I didn't say that. I said toilets in the Union buildings. These are maintained by the Union. Also ... you pay more to go to the concerts?? There will be NO concerts, so you won't be needing to pay more, they just won't exist!
yeah well, theres concerts in other places. last concert i went to at the BOTH i had to line up for 30 minutes to get a drink and stood outside the whole night anyway cos they oversold the thing. no loss.

your council rates pay for the upkeep of the roads, footpaths, collection of garbage, many things other than what you mentioned. how would you like it if you had to find a way to get rid of your rubbish. how would you get anywhere without driveable roads or walkable footpaths?

Absolutely true ...... however, they still offer services that are very expensive that I don't use. Also, are you really stupid enough to think the only things the fees cover is condoms, mozzie spray and the other things your mentioned??? :burn:

no, but these are what everyone else mentioned as being so important so i used them as examples.

and on your council rates, the majority of your rates do go to infrastructure maintenance and garbage collection. it is only a very small amount which goes libraries and other things. the council gets funding from both state and federal governments, its not only our rates that fund the council.

Emily ..... all I am hearing from you is "Me Me Me Me" you really do think it is ALL about you .... my God, why does the Uni offer programs other than B Commerce? It seems like a massive waste of time to have programs other than the one YOU want. Maybe after you graduate, the Uni can close completely - after all there will be no need for it anymore - YOU won't be there, so what is the point of it existing at all!!!!! That will save the Government a bit of money!!

Safisfaction? I'll be satisfied when i get the piece of paper in my hand saying "Bachelor of Commerce". Nothing else at uni would satisfy me. isnt that why we're paying thousands of dollars? VSU will have no bearing on this.
Ah ha... a commerce student. that explains the obsession with money.

this is so not a personal attack. your situation is very different to most students. can i also just clarify that full timers are not bludgers. its just instead of working all day, studying at night... we study all day then dash to work to waitress all night... its not particuarly different when you look at it is it???

you make a choice to not be involved in uni activities, perhaps you dont feel you have time or arent interested but its a CHOICE... vsu shouldnt be a choice because i doubt the uni will be able to specify who can use the student funded services that only half of us contribute to. maybe then you will have some sense of justice?... by bludging off the rest of us? but my point is that a % of us who still choose to contribute shouldnt be paying for others to use such service. before you fight me, what i mean here is that it should be an option to contribute becasue the services are designed to be used by everyone.

can we just agree to disagree though... youre distracting me from learning to be a good physio.

If she chooses not to be included in the uni activities it's her choice. She can then choose not to pay the union. It's Freedom of Choice

Simple as that.

No, i dont mean that, becuase we all pay tutition contribution fees for our degrees. everyone has an equal right to learn at university, we are all paying to be there, and i, and everyone else, is actually receiving something for that money. that example, was just it, an example. showing MY OPINION as to why i dont support the union. im sure many people suffered that same experience, but it stuck in my memory as it was one of the few times i actually used the union and i was not impressed. thats all.

exactly... this isnt personal. good on her for presenting a different point of view. its given me something to think about... as is the case with most 18year olds i tend to be idealistic and its always good when someone is prepared to have some sort of an intellectual arguement that challenges my pov and im sure that by reading my comments in this forum its pretty obvious that its changed...

im just wondering if there was as much debate over vsu in the senate [or whichever house???] as has been here tonight?

I myself used to be anti-VSU until I broadened my mind and listened to what the pro-VSU'ers were saying. In the end their case was far stronger than the anti-VSU'ers scare campaign, which had little substance.

EDIT: VSU has already been passed.

theres no need to make petty remarks about the choice of my degree.

and differentiation between payers and non payers: thats what union cards are for dear. my situation is not different from MOST students. there are a large number of students who are in my situation, granted most are in my/similar degrees but they are also scattered across the uni. given the size of the univeristy, that is a very significant figure.

as pol pot said, its my money, i should have the luxury of choosing what i do with it. just like you have the choice whether or not to be reading and replying to this and procrastinating from your study.

oh and guys, theres also the fact that VSU has already passed, so you should accept it and move on. no amount of whingeing and moaning on a bos forum is gonna save your beloved union.

Just to tell the pro-VSU people out there:

I'm not paying it, I'm in too much of a financial situation atm. I have to pay like another 300 for books, plus about 450 for insurance to drive me parents car.

Plus my sisters wedding, should cost me a shitload all up.

No way am I paying the VSU, I'll hardly be there except for Uni time unless I goto the BOTH on a Sat night or something.

But yeah, I'm not paying. Like Emily said, I'll be happy when I get my certificate saying "Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Economics" (Transfering to combined)

By the way, I have to pay Council rates, but I never use the library, swimming pools, art galleries, go to the town hall, use the child health centres etc etc - why does the argument of 'voluntary' payment extend to that? VSU is a stupid concept when you start thinking about all the other components of life where we do not have the same choices!
- everyone is forced to vote for the local council.
- if it were not for tax payers these services may not exist, many of the services the union provides are either useless or are redundant and will be replaced.

Needs to plan ahead... what? :/

Ah ha... a commerce student. that explains the obsession with money.
MMMMmmmYESSS!!! Them darstedly commerce students!!! Stop stereotyping people you tool - there are ALOT of socialist commerce students - ALOT!

you make a choice to not be involved in uni activities, perhaps you dont feel you have time or arent interested but its a CHOICE...
Um no, it's not a choice. Between uni/work I will have very little time this year to do any 'activities' - Yet i have to pay. I have no choice.

maybe then you will have some sense of justice?... by bludging off the rest of us? but my point is that a % of us who still choose to contribute shouldnt be paying for others to use such service.
That's not the way it will be at all. The students that don't pay - GET NO SERVICES. The students that do pay - GET SERVICES.

At the moment the way it works is: The students that use services - PAY. The students that don't use services - PAY.

Fair?

Emily ..... all I am hearing from you is "Me Me Me Me" you really do think it is ALL about you .... my God, why does the Uni offer programs other than B Commerce? It seems like a massive waste of time to have programs other than the one YOU want.
She's not forcing people who don't do B Commerce to help pay for her degree.

i think youre a bit confused. VSU is voluntary student unionism. i think you mean GSC. you WILL have to pay this semester or you wont be able to access your results at the end of semester. i believe they may even cancel your computer access (im not quite sure on that point). VSU doesnt start til 2nd semester, so im sorry but we all have to live with paying $187 this semester.

Some thoughts...

"Distance is a piss poor excuse"...Get a HD average before making a stupid comment like that. Why? Because of course distance is a piss poor excuse when you only need a P average.

"oMgZ it'z ab0u7 th3 w1d3r c0mMu|\|i7y, n0t ju5t j00!1!1!oneone"...Go grow a brain. Are most of the services ones which the vast majority of students will be using? No? Then stfu idiot. Not everyone is seeking/has time for a wider university experience? If you want one for yourself, then you pay for it. Don't ask others to pay for your pointless activities.

She's not forcing people who don't do B Commerce to help pay for her degree.
To add onto this. Omfg you are a total idiot. Emily is paying for her own course. She's not asking others students to pay for it. So Emily is not being selfish as she is paying for her own course. On the hand other, student contributions force many students to fund useless activities of other students. Now that, is selfish. Because most students don't use the services which are offered.

So uh yeah, j00 are so cool. Omg I love how you try to make yourself look intelligent by pretending to care about, and have a grasp of, the wider community. I mean, lets ignore how sad it is that you don't even understand the difference between forced student contributions and Emily paying for her own course.

Benny, now let me explain something to you ...... I wasn't saying that other people are paying for Emily's course, I was merely emphasising that Emily can not seem to see outside of herself. I was emphasising my opinion that Emily only cares about things that directly relate to her ..... so therefore I was saying that because it is ALL about Emily, then there is no purpose in having anything at Uni that didn't directly relate to Emily, ie any other courses or programs.

Oh, by the way, other people ARE paying for Emily's and other students courses. (Unless of course she and others are paying Full Fees) HECS is merely a contribution, it only covers part of the costs involved, the rest is paid by the Government, and therefore taxpayers.

Get it right if you are going to go down the 'showing intelligence' road!

No you were making what is called a straw man argument, you've taken apart all the substance to her argument and left it with its greedy shell to make this shithouse analogy.

Yes, the cost is spread out accross an entire country so it's really not that bad.
