i'll get my hands on some and give it a shot

itd take me a while to work out more complex stuff, but i reckon i could get it eventually
The first dream theater song i transcribed in full was 'Metropolis pt 1', so give that a listen if you want (yeh i know there are tabs for it all over the internet, but it was my favourite song, and i wanted practice). Most of it's pretty easy, but some parts are quite hard (mainly in the middle instrumental section).

i wouldnt bother with working out solos though
i just dont see the point. i would much rather improvise a solo than learn one.

but yeah, ive been working out zappa stuff, which is fairly complex
Yeh i agree, but some solos are just awesome (like the one in 'Under the glass moon' by DT, and 'Altitudes' by Jason Becker). Also, transcribing solos gives good practice for recognising intervals. I haven't heard much Zappa, but i remember that Vai worked with him, so it'd probably be good.

yeah zappa discovered vai

they're totally different though

zappa is imo the greatest musician of the twentieth century
some of his ideas were absolutley fucking insane.
it stemmed from listning to alot of stravinski and this other composer whos name escapes me

transcribe means you actually write it down on the musical staves though, which is pretty impressive. working songs out is called, working songs out

and working songs out and writing down the tab is called, tabbing it
