ok guys, been revsising over this stuff ahead of trials, i finally worked out how he used the maths to get the mass to charge ratio, now i cant work out one more thing....

in the textbooks it says that E, B and r (radius) can be calculated using the geometry of the plates and coils, how is this done? are we supposed 2 know how this was done? im thinking it would be more advanced mathematics still??

I don't see the purpose in calculating it. E and B, electric field and magnetic field, are already known when performing the mass to charge ratio experiment, what good would it do if you calculate it?

That's silly, I think.

no, im just tryin 2 work out how he calculated it, for an answer about this in an exam, so it would be enuf 2 say "he calculated it from the geometry of the coil"

E is calculated from E=V/d
Radius is calculated from the deflection of the point on the screen.

B is harder to calculate and is based on the current flowing through the coils, the radius of the coils and the number of coils.
