This wasn't even on my school email account, this was on my private non-school related email account!

I know two of my friends have gotten the same message before.

My friend sent out a mass email that contained some swearing in it, and I replied all to that message and then got the above email.

Does anyone have any idea about what this is about? Surely this is infringing on my rights?

If you could help me out that'd be great - when term starts I'm going to talk to the IT teacher.

If it was on a school computer, THEY CAN SEE EVERYTHING!

Technically you're not meant to be accessing your hotmail on school computers, so I would guess that is why you got monitored.

NOPE!

It was a gmail account. ALL the people who were sending and recieving emails were all hotmail and gmail accounts. It wasn't from a school computer and I wasn't logged into the DET portal.

So pretty much, in no way, associated with the Dep. of Education. Except all of us are high school students at the same school.

That error tells me that you sent something using your gmail account to an account on the education.nsw.gov.au mail server which have bad stuff in it (according to their filter) and blocked it. That email is the 'bounce' from the server...

Seeing as its gmail, a worm sending that is unlikely but possible.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a worm, at least on my computer, because I'm using a Mac. I'm also pretty sure none of the emails on the sending list would have redirected their emails to their school email account.

I then individually sent a letter to all the people on the list with the said swear word in it, and I got one email back from Education NSW.

But you're not 100% sure...I'd check that list again :p. They'll send you as many bounce emails as you send to them, so that means one of the emails is sending it off to school email.

Not sure anymore, but i remember them saying something like the whole point of implementing their email system was to prevent people using their own private ones which couldn't be monitored at school. I guess sometimes you get unlucky and get caught i suppose.

I've asked everyone on the mailing list and they've all said their emails aren't being redirected to their school emails, although some of them have accessed their school emails from home.

I don't understand how the government got hold of our emails! One of my friends friend got them too and he goes to a private school.

I sent everyone on the list an individual email with the swear word in it and I only got one email from the government telling me it contained prohibited content.

It's just an email 'bounce'. It merely means that somehow one of your emails reached the mail server. Seeing as gmail is web based, that can only really mean inbound.

It'd take a lot of effort to be monitoring http traffic from inside a school - much easier to just block the IP.

Post the entire header if you can...thanks.

They block profanity, so if you sent an email with 'bad' words in it, the recepient won't receive it.

It's likely that the mass email contained a few DET portal email addresses, so they probably have a glitch in the system. The system is designed to block profanity, but I don't think they had chain letters in mind. I'd say that their system sends a warning to all emails involved in the chain letter, regardless of being Hotmail, Gmail or DET.

They just suck.

And they won't be 'reading' the email. Who has the money to pay someone to do that anyway? If I were working that job, I'd go insane.

It'd be nothing more than a word / phrase filter.

I'll reiterate - there's NO way they could picked this up unless you:

a) sent it to someone on the DET mail server
b) were using GMail at school and got picked up by their proxy server scanning through TCP packets going to www.gmail.com.

I'd say b) is fairly unlikely - but very possible. Besides, if they had that kind of capability and wanted to curb the use of GMail - they'd just block it.

a couple of weeks ago I tried to send my Legal assessment to my DET email because I don't have a printer at home, only for it to bounce. the reason? my title was "sex slavery". as in, the topic I was studying? good fucking grief. they're censoring the word "sex" now? how old are we, eight?

thank god I had saved it onto my USB as well, otherwise I would have been majorly fucked.
