See, look at that, 'sir' isn't uncommon afterall, but yeah, most of the time you get the normal 'Mr.'. Truly, we spend hours of our degree discussing how we should get students to address us...

haha..how funny

i think being a teacher..well a student teacher anyway..i'd prefer to be called emily..but then i guess when i was an actual teacher miss.. would be more appropriate..although i think i'd still prefer my name lol

that said, i had trouble with teachers who wanted us to call them by their first names..was a little too odd for me..esp. brighty :p

I figure it depends on the year level and what the school/normal class teacher is like. I was sir or Mr to the younger years, except among some of the guys that went to sport with me, after that it was a little more casual, lol, ok, so they just called me by my last name with a 'y' on the end, but I also had some senior classes, my legal studies class in particular (it was pretty small) was always more casual.

hehe..last names with an 'y' on the end..thank GOD you can't do that to mine lol

i guess it all comes down to how you relate with your students and how comfortable and casual it all becomes..and yeh, age too i suppose..year 7 kids are so soft hehe

i reckon calling teachers by their first name is wrong lol
i just dont reckon it works hehe
cos youre sposed to show respect to teachers, and sir/mr/miss/mrs is a sign of respect, you dont use peoples first names generally if theyre older than you and um, superior to you i spose

i know its very old fashioned, but i reckon that if classes get too casual then the line will be blurred between teacher and student and i think that student teacher relationships could become more prolific and the teacher may have problems controlling the class sometimes too. there has to be that boundary for the safety of each party i reckon.

What are we supposed to say at uni? Sir, professor, the first name, their last name plus doctor if they are one?

yeah, year level has a bit to do with it (in my opinion lol). like, when you're little it's always formal(er?) and then, like, in senior school we just called people by their last name, or a shorterned version of that.

and adding 'y' to a last name is such a great aussie thing to do. that, and adding 'o' to stuff. eg. steve'o', serve'o', bottl'o', etc('o') .. haha sorry, bad joke there *hangs head in shame*
