Using the table A3, I figured that if I got into the 50th percentile, just the 50th percentile for all my subjects - I would already get an ATAR around 92.50. Just by that.

My working, scores are for P50:

Chemistry - 33/50
English (Adv) - 32.1/50
English (Ext 1) - 37.4/50
English (Ext 2) - 37/50
Legal Studies - 26.2/50
Maths (Ext 1) - 42.1/50
Maths (Ext 2) - 46/50
Physics - 31.8/50

With those, my counted subjects would be Maths (Ext 2) with 92/100, Maths (Ext 1) with 84.2/100, English (Ext 1) with 37.4/50, English (Ext 2) - 37/50, Chemistry with 66/100, English (Adv) with 64.2/100 - meaning Physics with Legal Studies not counting.

Adding the aggregate, I get 380.8/500, which from using Table 8b, a 90 ATAR's minimum aggregate was 367.4, with 95 ATAR is 401.5, meaning it's an ATAR of around 92.50.

That surely cannot be right - unless P50 is extremely difficult to get, and I don't think it is. My question, is my working correct? If so, this HSC thing is easier than I thought =P

It is right, but you know EX1, EX2, MX1, MX2 require ALOT of hard work to get 50th percentile. Also in these subjects you have most of the best/intelligent/hard working students in the state doing them. Thus alot of competition to get 50th percentile.

Hmm, didn't think of that. But the 'average' student in these subjects, permitting that they are capable of doing well - would still get around P50, right?

So I guess that's another point on the board for highly scaled subjects, just go average in them and you'll get 90+ ATAR automatically, I suppose.

Not really, I'd call it fact. It's there for all to see, facts cannot be disputed.

Probably why no one is replying =P

lol, it is right. Wanna know why?

The absolutely crazy scaling of mx1 and mx2.

I know of someone who got the following:

adv english - 83 *
chemistry - 78 *
legal studies 87 *
bio - 80
physics - 72

mx1 - 94 *
mx2 - 89 *

ones with an * were counted in atar calculation.

He got 94.4 ATAR

So working from rough estimates, ex1 and ex2 would be counted in your case, as well as mx1 and mx2, and then probably chem and phys - roughly equates to his moderated marks.

It's right.

Then I can't believe I aimed for a 90 ATAR in the first place... my aim should be for B Science (Adv Math) at Sydney Uni at 99.15 instead of UoW's BAM! Although BAM sounds better than BS(AM). And yes, I know they aren't the real acronyms but BAM! is cool, you must admit.

They scale well for a reason :)

nevertheless the edge that a student gets from choosing the right subjects is damn near tangible...

Try hard and you will succeed, regardless of scaling!

your calculations look right, dunno where the discrepancy is coming from

but yes, HSC is easy shit if you're just after a 92.5

it gets exponentially harder the higher you go.

the difference between skill between a 95 and a 98 is huge, and a 98 to 99 is huge, and a 99 to 99.5 is huge, etc.

dumbos can work hard hard hard and get a 99.3

smarties can work hard hard and get a 99.8

geniuses can get 99.95

:D

grubz, yeah, because you have people who aim for 70, 80, some even for 85, then you have the other 20 000 or so who aim for 99.95. So obviously yeah, you're right. Anyone who tells you they are aiming for 99 is lying, they are all seekritly planning on 99.95!
