OMG you do so much work!

i think do your homework, then study. But if the homeworks not really helpful just do it crap i do most of mine in homeroom lol. BUT it is useful in consolidating your knowledge and if you do your homework you don't have to study so hard later because you know and understand the content.

And I think you study too much anyway, 20 minutes a night a subject is heaps at this stage. But I admire your discsipline, my mum wishes i had some of that sigh...

I only do 3 hrs of study a day (done in the group after school.)

depends on the subject. as i said before, i don't usually get much homework but when i do i try to get it done pretty quickly because if you put it off the ideas might become vague and it'll be hard to get it done right.

on average, it might be 1 hour of homework a night and 4-5 of other stuff- reading, writing notes, researching, memorising stuff, etc.

There are only so many hours in a day to study and do homework. I know personally i study at school during my study periods per week it would add up approximately 12 hours per week in study periods. on top of that i study for at least 2-3 hours on school nights and on the weekends i spend 5 hours studying on Saturday and Sunday. So you might as well say I study for ten hours on the weekend and 10-15 hours per school week. plus I find time for socialising as well.

Its all about sitting down and working out what you would do instead. So instead of watching TV for 2 hours then doing homework. I watch an hour of tv a week. I dont watch movies on dvd or video. The time spent watching tv i spend studying.

well.. the idea is to get the assignment done asap, so you can spend the time before your exam studying. If its a non assessable task, don't worry to much, the worst they can do is give you a N-award warning.

i really need to write up more study notes for those subjects that require it. I don't do nearly enough of that. I seem to have a lot of homework that to get all the study AND homework i want done i'd have to work from like 4pm - 12 non-stop.

i think my problem is that the way in which i complete work is not efficient enough or something. As in i take an hour to complete something that would take someone else like 20 mins to do....i don't no, maybe its cos i use as many sources as possible and combine them<<< takes longer than just copying from one.

meh ..just need to write more (a lot more) notes for SAC and Legal...kewl

It depends on what the homework is, but generally writing up notes and studying a topic to understand concepts is much more valuable that doing homework. (For the purposes of this comment, homework is pointless things such as doing 1000 maths problems that are the same, once you feel that it is getting repetitive stop! you don't have to do every question! Homework is also where you may be required to complete a worksheet full of questions. From past experience these worksheets are dodgy. It depends on what type of homework it is though.) In Yr 12, you teacher should not be giving home work. You teacher should leave it up to you to study, I think rather than them saying do these exercises for homework, they should say here are some questions that I would recommend you doing.

For subjects such as Legal Studies that is all memorising stuff and not much else, don't bother with homework. Who really wants to do sheets full of comprehension questions, that aren't organised by syllabus dot points? NO ONE

But, of course, teachers tend to get a bit angsty if you repeatedly don't do their homework on purpose for no good reason, so you should probably do a bit to keep them happy.

i think people underestimate the value of study for NON-content based subjects...english especially.

if i have homework for a particular subject and want to study for it aswell i find i have to do it straight after the homework or i don't come back to it. its annoying when you feel like the homework it pointless...but it usually helps heaps for the next class i think

You teacher should leave it up to you to study, I think rather than them saying do these exercises for homework, they should say here are some questions that I would recommend you doing.

I agree with this but at a school like mine where only about one quarter to half the class are diligent enough to work independently, it is important for the teacher to set them some homework- or else they wont do anything. However the downfall of this is that harder working students like us get slowed down by the homework.

Any tips on how to study leading up to half yearlies in 3 weeks? E.g. Where to start, what to prioritise, etc?

Stuff homework. Most of the time its a waste of time. I never did it. But, I did study and so should you. Studying is much more important.

Heh, maths is a given but my friend who got 98 in English said never do English homework

Er, you might want to slow it down a little bit. You'll burn out if you go at that pace. Or, at least I would. Maybe you're one of those people who can handle that much study each day?

If you're doing that much work and still not getting all of it done, then you're probably doing something wrong/not managing time efficiently. Unless you spend most of that time revising. I dunno; to spend 5 hours/day studying seems like overkill to me (but that is only my opinion).

There is no set structure for a study to homework ratio; you have to do what works for you. Some people can just study and revise everything without doing homework and ace the subject whilst others learn through experience (ie doing questions through homework) as studying doesn't help the information stick.

I know people who only studied and did minimal homework and did really well in the HSC. On the other hand, I also did well, but I only studied before exams and spent most of my time doing (4u maths :mad1: ) homework. The only study I did throughout the year was when I "once-in-a-while" read through the sheets and textbook. I wrote up all my notes in one go for my subjects ~2 weeks before the exams (excluding, of course, the HSC).

So, after that long-winded response o), find out what works for you.

While my study skills suck majorly atm i do needa do that much.

I did 5 hrs of work from alternate books with all the required book work (about 8 hrs) and only got 45% in chem today :S
