Hey guys,

If anyone could provide worked solutions to the Qs below - that'd be great!

1. A hydrogen atom is excited from its ground state to its n = 4 state.

a. How much energy must be absorbed for this to occur?
b. Draw an energy-level diagram showing possible routes by which the excited atom can return to the ground state. Calculate the wavelengths of the possible photons emitted as it returns to the ground state.

2. A proton collides with the atom causing an electron to move from n(i) = 1 to n(f) = 3. Calculate the theoretical minimum speed required by the proton.

Cheers,
l.a.

for 1.a. just use Rydberg's equation with nfinal=1 and ninitial=4, then sub the wavelength into c=flamda to find f. Then sub f into Energy=fh where h is Planck's constant.

1.b. im pretty sure its asking u to draw the diagram that shows the levels it falls down to. So it could fall from4->3->2-1 or from 4->3->1 or 4->1, also draw 4->2->1. But when calculating the photon wavelength only do it for the first three as the last is the same as the first as you only have to calculate the wavelength as it falls to the GROUND state. i.e 4->1, 3->1, 2->1.

Sorry can't hellp you with the last one. It seems to simple to just use Rydberg's equation again.

Hope that makes sense
