Transfer from Uni RMIT -----> UMELB or UMONASH (1 Viewer)

Hey guys,

I'm currently studying Associate Degree of Engineering Technology (which seems like a TAFE Degree but it's not, it's more like between TAFE and UNI kind of degree). This is currently my first year and i was wondering after i finish this next year to go to UMELB or UMONASH to do Bachelor of Commerce (either Uni, but i mostly prefer going to UMELB, since i have better options there). I wanted to learn two fields (that is, Commerce and Engineering) and i was wondering if i can do a credit transfer if that is possible? If not, are there any ways to just get there?

If you want additional info about the degree that i'm doing:

Course: Associate Degree of Engineering Technology (RMIT City Campus)
Duration: 2 Years
Credit Points available: 192 CP
Pathways: If averaged 2.0 GPA, the student can be offered a place in a relevant Bachelor Degree of the relevant Major done in Second Year (7 majors available to choose from in the second year) with two years exemption (worth 192 CP)

Before considering a potential transfer to either uni, have you completed the required prerequisite 3/4 subjects (english + methods) and achieved the relevant study scores? If not you may need to make sure to complete a subject at uni that can replace these.

Commerce at Melbourne has specific breadth tracks in engineering so you may find that you'll receive relevant credit for your engineering subjects. Also worth noting that a transfer into Comm at Melbourne or Comm at Monash will require a roughly 80 and 70 WAM respectively.

Actually, i got both of the prerequisites for B Commerce. Got 32 in English (EAL) and 38 in Maths Methods. I couldn't get in because of my ATAR (which was less than 95, not even close really)

Great! You'll find that most universities won't tell you upfront what subjects you'll receive credit for. It's a bit of a gamble but it still may be worth an email to the respective faculties to check.

A good place to start is also the subject guides for each uni (i.e. it should be pretty easy to find a list of recommended subjects for a particular engineering breadth sequence and compare this to what you have completed.)

Have you considered the move into a double degree at RMIT, i.e. B Eng + B Bus? Might be an easier way to ensure you receive credit for all of your subjects!

I did email Uni Melbourne about this last year (posted it on the General Inquiry page), but all i received was how there are factors into checking the CP that i've earnt (in about a year or so) and so on (basically saying to just do my own research again).

So you're saying that i can get credit for getting 30+ in English (EAL) and Maths Methods in VCE? That would be a huge advantage for me. Has any one of your friends did something like this? Since i assume you're doing the same course (it's literally written down there).

And how about those subject guides? Is there one for Uni Melbourne? The only one i've found so far is the "Handbook" where it just gives a lengthy description about the stuff that they do in each course and grades and so on. I also went to i think an interactive "credit transfer" thing where you can select the subjects you did (none of them are in my course though) and it will say to what course i can go to. For example, a certain unit (Engineering Materials or something) will allow me to go to Bachelor of Science with a credit transfer (or something along the lines). It's not really that helpful for me as far as where i want to go.

A lot of people have been talking about doing a double degree like the one you said. But.....RMIT is kinda bad at Business, and i don't think the fact that i'm trying to get at Uni Melbourne, compared to RMIT, is something i would turn down to. You see, if i get into Bachelor of Commerce (given that i had some luck) i could also do a Master in Engineering that will take me about 2 years. So in 5 years, i've got a master and a bachelor of two fields to show for it. In RMIT though, i might have to wait. And getting a business degree doesn't seem like it's worth it. I was hoping RMIT might've had a Bachelor degree for Commerce, but i think they're into one major. I like to do accounting personally and i like doing it, but RMIT doesn't seem to give me that choice in the end. Long term wise, Uni Melbourne is just better. But if luck doesn't fall down on me, inevitably that would be my choice.

Sorry for going to a lengthy post, but if i can get into Melbourne Uni i know i can achieve something valuable there.

Hey sorry, should have been more clear. You won't get credit for English/Methods, but rather you can't even transfer into the bCom unless you've achieved the required marks in year 12.

If your subjects aren't coming up in that search function you'll probably just have to take a bit of a risk and attempt a transfer and then see what credit you'll receive retrospectively. The 'handbook' is what I was referring to above.

RMIT is still fairly strong in business. Under the Bachelor of Business you can choose to major in accounting, finance etc. It's the exact same as a Bachelor of Commerce.
