Travel on the job at Big 4 (1 Viewer)

Hey anyone know if there is a lot of travelling on the job (i know this dependent on which section you work in) at big 4 firms - for graduates?

Is it true big 4 looks after staff very well? I heard instances where EY agreed to pay off the remainder HECS on some dude's double degree.

What other perks on the job?

Not interstate. The Big 4 have offices in each major city for this reason.

There may be a bit of intrastate travel - out to rural areas.

If you're in audit, you get to walk and catch cabs around the city a lot. Fun stuff.

Most of the clients that the Big 4 serve are CBD or city based.

You might be able to switch to a different state at some time, but these opportunities will be limited.

As for other perks - they train you well. They pay for your CA or other work-related qualifications. They give you study leave. They give you the option of purchasing extra vacation time. All pretty good stuff.

But don't go in thinking you're going to be a globe trotting jet setter.

That is not entirely true, I know a few people that have travelled interstate on client work. From both Tax and Audit.

Just because you may work in the office in Sydney, does not mean some of your clients will not be based in Melbourne...alot of my clients have HQ in Melbourne for instance.

It is all very dependant, if your lucky you will travel interstate, but then again you may not. There is always opportunity for secondment.

Try spending 4 months on the same client, 3 of which are in Canberra.

The living away from home allowance is good.

They look after you very well. I've already had people from my intake all over NSW, to melbourne and other parts of VIC.. You're especially well looked after if you have to work overtime...

Other perks? FS = pretty lenient with coffee/snack runs.. lol.. Lindt milkshakes ftw.

Seniors I work with in my division have gone to places such as India for 3 weeks to train EY Bangalore staff on US SOX-type work...to Macau to check out PBL's casino, and to the Cayman Islands for some dodgy job. Those I the direct experiences I know of, so you may be lucky enough!

Depends what division you are in... in MY experience, sometimes you will need to perform an audit on a client which has offices around the country. It is often cheaper and easier to just go around and do it yourself since you understand how the client's system works and know exactly what you're looking for- rather than having to document a set of procedures, provide guidance to people in other states, and then provide telephone support when they run into trouble- then you have to review their work, ask questions if you aren't sure if they did it right, double check to make sure they ARE doing it right, etc...

Hence why it's sometimes easier to just DIY and go interstate.

Just for the record (for those who don't know), some firms differentiate between internal and external auditors. IT Auditor is a form of internal audit.
