Trouble enrolling MATH1231 (1 Viewer)

Heya, last year I completed MATH1151 while in a BCommerce degree, and have since decided I didn't want to do commerce any more, so swapped to BSci/BEd.

Anyways, I need to do the second maths course for stage 1, and was trying to enrol in MATH1231 for semester 2, but it says I can't because I haven't met the requirements. MATH1151 is a lot harder than MATH1131, and according to the online handbook MATH1131 and MATH1141 are both excluded once MATH1151 is completed.

Does that mean it is a mistake that I can't enrol in MATH1231, so I should contact the school of mathematics or something?

Oh yeah... due to a lack of effort and a lack of general interest, I only just passed MATH1151, so those who are about to suggest that I do MATH1251 can save your breath

Agreed. Speak to Dr Trenery, or the course-coordinator for MATH1251 to get the prerequisite waived. If the school of maths won't enrol you, get a signed letter to show that the prerequisite has been waived, then you can take it to the relevant program authority.

I emailed him yesterday, and got a response a bit later.

He spent about 2 paragraphs explaining how MATH1151 and MATH1131 are completely different since MATH1151 goes into a lot more depth and they also cover different topics, and how students are supposed to do 1131+1231 or 1151+1251 etc. etc., but let me do MATH1231 anyways, so all is good

You should do MATH1251. It is somewhat more easier to follow than MATH1151.
The lecturers are Tacon and Trenerry so you can confer with either one of them if you got problems.
Only 3 people failed last year's MATH1251 out of 134 people --> 97.7% pass rate.

Reasons why you can't do MATH1231 after MATH1151 is because they swap the probability and complex numbers topics around (ie, MATH1131 teaches complex numbers, but not probability, unlike MATH1151).

Yeah, Trenery mentioned that in the email, said it would be a major problem if I was considering a maths major (which I am) because I would miss complex numbers.

I don't really think it will be a problem though, I did complex numbers in high school, and I was enrolled in MATH1251 for the first few weeks when we covered complex numbers anyways.

It's not that I'm scared of failing if I do MATH1251 or anything..... it's just that I'm working full time as well as doing uni full time next semester, so I'm trying to keep my work load at a minimum.
No point doing subjects I will have to work hard for if I don't really need to do them.
