Types of techniques in shorts response and reflections (1 Viewer)

If a short response question or reflection question asks for language techniques what does that include? And can we then use only language devices and no structural techniques?

I use syntax a lot in my short response answers. Does that count as a language device?

What if a reflection asks to analyse how you used structure, can we only talk about structure?

Also, can they specify this for essays as well? Because, I tend to have a mix of structural and language devices, and if they specify one, half my essay becomes useless.
