I was wondering how many hours you would be able to work if you were studying a combined law degree (specifically arts/law).
I know that the in-class time is approximately 13 hours per week (at ANU) but how many hours would you have to spend studying if you wanted credit/distinction results?
Also can you squeeze these hours into 2 or 3 days or will they be really spread out (i guess it would depend on your majors??)
Also any general info. about study time for all subjects would be appreciated.

i think i had about 16 contact hours this semester - but that's also coz i do a language which adds a bit more. i had pretty full days monday to wednesday, one class on thursday and no classes on friday. i found it really useful to have a 3 day weekend.
each class, especially first year law subjects, have repeat lecture times eg. i had contracts lectures on monday and wednesday, or you could go i think it was tuesday and friday. so that offers you quite a bit of flexibility.

Is it hard to learn a language at Uni? I was looking at learning spanish- but doing german at school has made me think that studying a language is really hard. I still went well when I learnt it- coming 2nd or 3rd- but it wasn't much fun.
Also how do they teach languages; do they speak entirely in the other lanuage every lesson?

i don't find it hard to learn a language at uni, in fact, the majority of my friends all study a language. french, italian, german, chinese etc. i found it easier to do well in german than my other subjects because you have one hour a day, four times a week - so you are consistantly speaking/reading/hearing the language. and the assessment is in the form of essays/tests etc every couple of weeks. so each piece of assessment is only worth about 10% as opposed to a scary 70% exam.

in regards to the language of the class - it depends on what level you're at. before you start you have to do a placement test, they usually do this on the same day, or at least the same week, as you enroll. the test just makes sure that they put you in the right level. generally it goes beginner, continuing, intermediate, advanced. i went into continuing coz i'd done german at high school, but i took a year off between school and uni and didn't use my language skills in that time so my german was a bit rusty. first semester of continuers there was still a lot of spoken english, but second semester they only spoke english when they really needed to emphasise a point, and only after they'd already said it in german.

i do a bachelor of arts/law and i found that last year (my 2nd year) i could do 2 full days of work a week with ease.

If you are lucky enough you can get a job with a pretty accomidating employer who will let you take your reading bricks / text book and read them at work during quiet periods.

As for studying to get credit / distinction results i found that i like to have the whole weekend off to study throughout the day / socialise at night but i mean if you organise your timetable correctly you have plenty of time throughout the week to study as well...

I figure you need about 4 hours per subject not including class time. For some of the arts courses you have about 1-2 hours reading per week which you must add on assessments and then tute prep (depending on the course)
