But doesn't your assessment mark count towards your overall mark so overall your school would affect you??

Only in a minor way - as I said, assessment marks are moderated according to the performance of a school on the HSC exam. A school like Ruse is more likely to perform better than Mt Druitt. However, it is only a significant difference when you compare schools at the extremes of the spectrum (such as those two).

In summing up, the fact of the matter is, watever damn school u go to, if u come first in a course, ur school's average wont affect anything, as ur moderated assessment mark will be the top HSC exam mark
so if u went to Ruse and got 98 for 4U maths and came 1st, u'd do just as well (not taking into account external factors such as the learning environment) as u'd do at Mt Druitt with 98 for 4U maths, provided u came 1st

but if u didnt come first, then problems start
