hahha 1 yr in medicine is very small.. lots of ppl will fail and stuff.. its very stressful..

depends wat u want to do in life..
if ure sure its medicine do a 5 or 6 yr course.. there is alot of contraversy on the topic.. basically they may not even take u at all... given the interviews..

yeh, but how is dat meant to help u, wen it comes to the future, like jobs and that.
Like wat diff wuld it make if u didnt do a BMedSc for 1 yr.

Possible use for an honours year:

According to a surgical registrar I spoke to recently, in order to get a decent position at a big teaching hospital as a specialist physician (as aposed to a surgeon) you will often need to have a PhD. Given the likelihood of research cropping up during your medical career, and the presence of competetive requirements like I just mentioned, it could be very handy to have some lab/research skills tucked under your belt. Also, an honours year can be used as a smoother pathway into a PhD.

Any university which a) is willing to accept me and b) offers an arts/medicine option ---> UNSW wins by proximity.

hahah I took the offer i got

i suspect im self-styled.. but I know that different ppl are suited for different courses.. and the diversity is great..

every school will have about 10-20% of them having 99.9+ ppl in it.. its crazy

i think u need to think wat u want to sacrifice and what u want..

The primary reason why I want the arts/med option is because I enjoy the humanities. They offer a break from the typical cramming of medicine and allow me to indulge in more analytical thinking. At the moment I am tossing up between philosophy and development studies. In terms of potential opportunities: If I go with philosophy I will end up doing a lot of ethics (perhaps with an honours project oriented that way) which, in the future, could lead to doing some work in the field of medical ethics... perhaps getting involved with a hospital ethics comittee? Development studies would be very relevant if I end up doing some work with aid organisations which aim to better the situation of the developing world. At the moment I'm trying to determine the possibility of doing a cross-disciplinary honours year looking at developing world health (alas, the degree structure forces us to start planning early...).

Yeah, that's a fair call, I've been looking into the MPH option. However, I believe I've worked out a way to do the MBBS + BA(hons) in 7 years, though I'm yet to confirm this.

Since when does UniSA have med? I'd go Med @ Adelaide. Awesomeness!!! Flinders is my next choice though. I love Adelaide too much

I am primarily doing it for an education, not for a career. My personal values lead me to value the arts degree in itself... it saves me from being sucked into a degree which would otherwise just be a vocational one. To give you more of an answer - no, I don't think that the arts degree will open up more career options per se. Rather, I think it will act to steer me towards certain areas of medicine/health by piquing my interest.

is it possible, with a perfect UMAT and a 100 UAI, to not get into medicine by completely bombing the interview?

the unis wuld tell u it is possible, but realistically if der waz someone really like dat they wuld prbbly accept him automatically, i wonder....
