I was just wondering, what are the courses that require UMAT? I'm pretty sure you need it for Pharmacy and Med right?

But, do you need it for Optometry?

Thanks in advance if you can help <3 <3

UMAT News: Bachelor of Optometry applications now
require UMAT
The UMAT has just been introduced as a selection requirement
for the B. Optometry.
The UMAT is held in all states on Wednesday, 27 July, 2005.
Applications to sit the test must be submitted to the Australian
Council for Educational Research (ACER) before Friday, 17
June.
Further information on the UMAT can be obtained from ACER
on (03) 92775757.
To prepare for the UMAT, the test also required for admission
to undergraduate Medicine and other Health Sciences, it is
suggested that students visit the AMEPP website and take the
appropriate steps to register for their preparatory programme
www.amepp.com.au.
From here.

But I'm reading different things from different sources so who knows, you might need UMAT, you might not.

GAMSAT for post-graduate Medicine.

Some interstate unis do not require UMAT for Medicine (eg James Cook University)

Also, most uni's require interview for Med entry.

Pharmacy is STAT.

On the ACER website, Sydney University isnt on the list for having UMAT as an entry requirement. Is that true? or maybe sydney doesnt offer a medical course?

okay... thanks guys for all your help... but im still confused ><"

it says on the unsw site...

In New South Wales, the only program for optometrists is conducted by the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of New South Wales.

The UMAT is not required for direct entry to the BOptom BSc for 2007.

It is anticipated that applicants to BOptom BSc for 2008 entry will be required to undertake the UMAT. Some international students may be exempt from sitting the UMAT.
so if i want to do optometry...
i firstly... have to do it with bachelor of science...
and i must go to unsw (since its the only program here)
and since i'm in year 12 this year... i also have to do umat???

hi jaay! cool another optometry hopeful join the club with me and kimberlin!
1) yeah optometry used to be a 4 yr program at UNSW but they restructured it so starting from 2007 its a 5 yr program (BOptom BSci).
2) Check out Uni melbourne they offer optometry as well.
3) UMAT for unsw optom? like the website says "its anticipated" The website has not been updated in a while! So i'll keep checking it every now and then and pm u once i find out!
make sure u apply for UMAT in April anyway

hope ur not too confused anymore!!

hi guys... thanks everyone for all the help - but i was so frustrated i ended up emailing the Administrative Assistant at UNSW for answers... to help everyone else out too...

here's the reply to my email:

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Bachelor of Optometry Bachelor of Science (BOPtom BSc) program at the University of New South Wales.

For 2008 entry onwards, in addition to submitting a UAC application applicants must submit an application to sit the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test (UMAT) with the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) by early June 2007 (
www.acer.edu.au) and sit the test on 25 July 2007.

There are no prerequisites for the BOptom BSc degree however it is assumed that applicants, through their high school studies (or other equivalent study) will have achieved a level of knowledge that prepares them to cope successfully with the content of the course. For the BOptom BSc, the assumed and recommended knowledge are:
Assumed: Mathematics, Chemistry and English Advanced
Recommended: Physics

* For all NSW HSC subjects listed, you are expected to have achieved a level of performance at Band 4. General Mathematics is not suitable.

If you do not have the level of assumed knowledge you are not prevented from enrolling but you may be placed at a considerable disadvantage while studying the courses in the BOptom BSc. If you have not achieved the recommended level of assumed knowledge you are strongly advised to undertake a bridging course or other appropriate preparation. For details of bridging courses offered by UNSW please visit:
www.unsw.edu.au/bridging .

hope this helps you guys too... cos it helped me... ^^;;
once again, thanks for everyone's help... =]
