yep, i can tell u with certainty it is happening, the course will be designed to take the best of the best, and will be geared towards a career in research rather than general practice. The theory is that by doing the B ScAd or B Medsc first, the students will have all the skills necessary to perform top research, and by this i mean like cancer cure type stuff. The med degree will be the same as normal, so if they want they can practice, but the idea from the get go will be that they go into research, and the faculty will help them in anyway they can to help them get into research.
The course is not an easier way to get into med, the intake will be extremely small, and extremely competitive. You will have to maintain almost a high distinction average in the first degree (a minimum avg mark of 80 is needed)
So unless you want to become a researching doctor, i would sugest that this is not the course for you.

if i want to become a doctor, and i want to goto uSyd, what do i have to do in these cases:

1) I achieve a UAI good enough to straight into medicine (or medical science, whichever)
2) I only achieve a UAI good enough to get into B.Science

I'm actually aiming to get into post-grad medicine. But the head of faculty of science informed me you only need a credit average to be applicable. anyway i'm thrilled about this new undergraduate pathway

uhm i believe med sci is in fact very very different from med... u can't really be a licenced doctor as such, and the courses u do, oh well, they ARE related, but you learn vastly different things... and by the looks of it, you can get a good mark and get into med at usyd (which i believe is quite stupid too) ...

but for the grad med at usyd, u can complete any undergrad degree and apply for it... so choose the one u like, so u don't end up being stuck in the middle if u fail to get in...

i hear that med science is way useful for getting into postgrad in that it teaches you most things needed for gamsat.

if u want to get into undergrad medicine, as in starting med subjects in 1st year, u cant do that at Usyd, u have to go to UNSW or Newcastle. If you want to apply for these uni's, u have to apply long before you get your UAI, but i'm not sure of any of the details about that.

If you want to do postgrad medicine at Sydney, u have to complete another degree first, any degree at all, you could do an arts degree if you wanted, but u have to do really well to be competitive for entry into med, and u have to to the GAMSAT, and i'm not sure what else, an interview i think.

So if you dont get a good enough UAI for med, and u get one good enough for BSci, then u can do the BSci degree and work hard and then apply for post grad medicine.

The undergrad medicine course offerred at USyd from next year will not start you off doing med subjects in first year, you will be doing med science or advanced science subjects, which you will have to excell in to then be considered for a place in the undergrad med course. IE - no students straight from high school will be studying medicine in their first year at uni at Usyd.

yeh i asked bout it too
the girl said there were only like 10 places, and it was very hard to get into
so im just going to try the normal gamsat way, if i suck at the hsc this year and dont get into med.

You need to have an MBBS then specialise to become a pathologist...they are doctors, you know.

And this style of entry looks tough. I probably would have chosen it over UNSW if it had been offered in my year, but maintaining a HD average for 3 years is not going to be easy.

If you want a guaranteed entry scheme like this, go to UQ. They only require a CR average. ANU has this scheme too, but they still require you to sit the GAMSAT and have a decent score, which IMO defeats the purpose of the guaranteed entry.

u can get a medical science degree to work with pathologists, in a pathology lab, but the pathologist with the DR. will be responsible for overseeing the data

errr.. lik gettin a B med sci isnt lik only for research ppl.. cos lik when u do the fellowship exams alot of questions are asked bout ure method.. and by studying in with med sci.. ure biochemistry is usualli set..

i aim to do one cos i want to take a yr off med n med sci lays the foundations for good medicine.. tats why in melb u do a couple of hrs more and u get the B. MedSc with ure MBBS in Adel its a BMedSc(Hons) for a year..

sorry, i meant no disrespect to pathologists, i mean that you work alongside doctors rather than as an actual practicing doctor. so yeah, you might work in a pathology lab or something.
its kind of one of those degrees that everone goes "oh yeah" to, but few really understand what it means....

thats pretty bad but in the end the umat only makes generalisations about peoples ability to relate to people. it doesnt take inot account the use of body language or tone of voice.
Sydney doesnt even use umat anyway. gamsat doesnt even test how people relate with each other.
I think its a good idea because it is for people who are keen on research and dont have ot relate to patients in that case (although they do have to with collegues)

yeh course UMAT cant test all those things. the test is stuffed anyway hehe.
but yeh this isnt this 'special' undergrad pathway to medcince jst the new 'combined medical science and medicine program'? isnt it the one that only offers interviews to pple who fit the TSP criteria i.e 99+ and band6 in at least a science or maths?
this things jst as hard to get in as the UMAT way or postgrad GAMSAT thing, except with less baggage. meds for the elites.

do u think ure family doctor has bad skills?

because till about 10 yrs ago.. they got in on yr12 scores.. now all medicals schools teach professional communications subjects..srsly.. u get a person.. sometimes an actor or a general member of the public.. and they for about 5 mins stop talking and listening to u..

this is experience and training that takes up to 30-40% of my time.. and i just think that its unfair to say that usyd grads wont hav these skills..

all unis teach this.. USyd also goes part clinical 1st yr.. i.e they goto hospital.. and u practice ure hands-on skills lik venupunture... at 5 -6 yr courses.. u do about 20% clinical.. at 4 yr courses u do bout 40% clinical.. so they push u hard..

i think its good Usyd are doing this.. cos there are some high performers that dun kno weather they want to do med.. and this gives them lik a pre-med time.. rather than wasting a spot in UNSW then figuring out tat they dun want to do med.. and hav no grade points.. cos med is integrated.. i.e when ure in.. dont expect to transfer to 2nd yr BSc after 1 yr of med..

this is a old article but the figures havent changed too much.. its a bit of a worri.. 6 yrs on.. and the intake to med schools hav only increased recently..
