Hey, don’t stress — here’s a simple scaffold you can follow for that question:

Intro – define unemployment, mention how it’s measured, and set up your thesis (basically that unemployment has multiple causes and major impacts on both the economy and people).

Body
  1. Causes – cyclical (downturns), structural (skills mismatch, tech change/globalisation), frictional (job transitions), maybe seasonal.
  2. Effects on the economy – lost output (lower GDP), budget pressure (more welfare, less tax), inflation/unemployment trade-off (Phillips curve/NAIRU). Remember to use real life examples (e.g. JobSeeker drain on budget).
  3. Effects on individuals – lower income and living standards, higher inequality, mental health/social impacts. Remember to use real life examples (e.g. trends in Youth Unemployment).

Conclusion – tie it back together, say why it matters, and link to policies aimed at reducing unemployment.

If you want full scaffolds with stats and examples, EconTools actually has essay scaffolds for every past essay question in the last 10 years. Members also get a free Band 6 essay (past ones have covered external stability and macro policy, but we take suggestions for future ones). Unemployment is a hot topic right now and we’re thinking of making it this month’s free essay.

Good luck!
