Can someone going to Uni please explain to me this whole HECS-Help/Commonwealth Supported Place to me. Here is what I am struggling with.

I am able to claim my education expenses as a tax deduction because it relates to my work etc – however I cannot make a claim for “self-education expenses for a contribution amount paid to an education provider by you or by the Australian Government under HECS-Help”. What I am confused about is, is a Commonwealth Supported Place also a Hecs-Help place?? I am hoping to get a slight bit of help from the government, but do not need a HECS debt as I can afford to pay for the rest of the fees.

Hope this makes sense to you all out there lol!

Yes.

HECS-HELP = The loan for CSP students.

FEE-HELP = The loan for Full-Fee Paying students.

I'd be confirming that you're eligible to be claiming these payments as tax deductions on the basis of your employment though, that tends to be a bit of a grey area.

You can't claim HECS as a tax deduction. Be careful, I saw a guy get smashed by the ATO at the AAT as he was claiming education expenses which he shouldnt have.

So basically, you can not claim your uni fees as a tax deduction as a portion of it is subsidised by the government.
