hi all,
i've heard that some unis are better at others in particular faculties e.g. engineering unsw and uts are generally better. Are these rankings true? and where can I go to find the rankings of uni for all the diff types of faculties

Yes, universities tend to excel and be superior to other universities in particular fields (with UNSW being a well-regarded university for engineering as you mentioned), and this may be accurately indicated in field-specific ranking. QS and Times Higher Education are generally considered quite reliable in terms of their approach to ranking universities. Both provide overall as well as field-specific rankings, allowing you to compare universities as a whole, but also gain insight relevant to your particular study interests by comparing universities in terms of specific fields.

With that being said, it is important to note that such rankings are largely informed by each university's level of research output. This means that the amount of research that a particular university conducts and publishes contributes significantly to its position relative to other universities. This is an area where Go8 universities tend to excel, given the fact that they are research-focused institutions.

It is also important to keep in mind that a university being better than another university in a particular field does not necessarily mean that the other university is bad in that field. Both universities may offer good programs. As a university student, other important factors that you need to emphasise are your academic performance as well as work experience that you can gain during your time at university. Here, you may find that a particular university is a better option for you because it may offer a work experience component (such as an internship), which can increase your employability as a graduate.

I hope this helps! :D

@dav53521 are you going to take this disrespect?
I shall not take it, and my reply is if you want to go to UTS go to UTS. Although UTS can be pretty scuffed interesting at times I'm looking at you communication for information technology professionals and business requirements modelling (and some other future subjects that I can't fully comment on yet). I would include intro to info systems but I managed to escape it

I do not feel UTS was not honest about the degree me and my classmates. We were doing a data engineering degree. However the head teacher knew nothing about data engineering he seem to specialise in some other areas. The key aspect behind data engineering is ETL. This was never taught. Ultimately, the Bachelor of Engineering (data) degree was replaced with Bachelor of Engineering(data science). Unfortunately I was never informed about this change.

Examining the course outline for Bachelor of Engineering (data) we will observe subjects unrelated to data engineering are taught. No cloud computing subjects. No python subjects are taught. Core subjects such as data structures and algorithms and discrete math are also not taught.

Looking at the link below we will see subject called Introduction to Data Engineering. Interestingly the subject is taught in MATLAB. Unfortunately, there are no jobs involving both MATLAB and data engineering. Part of the reason is that MATLAB is proprietary software in order words it cost money is used unlike open source alternatives such as Python.

https://handbook.uts.edu.au/2018/subjects/details/41082.html

In all fairness there have been improvements overtime. Funnily enough Introduction to data engineering is still taught using MATLAB in the 2023 handbook.

are there any rankings that differentiate unis or even specific university faculties based on employability/student experience? I feel like research output isn't as important in deciding which universities are 'better' per se.

QS Rankings claim that their ranking criteria takes employment outcomes, and employer reputation into account.

comparED, it’s run by the government and doesn’t do rankings per se but you can use it to make comparisons
