In week 10 the UNSW Union will be having its annual elections to elect 4 ordinary members to it's board of directors. There are 8 candidates. Official information is available here.

The Union is the organisation that provides a lot of the services on campus, it runs most of the retail outlets, the unibar, O-Week, Roundhouse parties and a lot of volunteer activities. The board of directors oversees the activities of the Union, it does not run the day to day operations of it (there are full time staff to do that).

For those who want to know more, there is an article on page 22 of the week 9/10/11 issue of Tharunka on the Union election. There is also a candidates statement in page 11 of Blitz. I highly recommend people read one of these two as most people who vote know little about who they are voting for or why.

I'm going to do my best to try to give a brief outline of each candidate in a factual and objective way (*see the end of my post). I will do my best to update this as I get more information. If there is something about a candidate that I have missed (or have gotten incorrect), please send me a private message. I will be modifying the list as soon as I get some more information.

The candidates are (in alphabetical order by surname):

Rehana Ahmed
Running jointly with James Ye
The Deputy Presiding Chairperson for the Student Guild Councill for 2005

Kate Bartlett
Running jointly with Josh Brandon
On the Union Food and Retail Committee in 2005
Was the NSW University Theatrical Society (NUTS) Secretary in 2004

Belinda Bentley
To be completed

Josh Brandon
Running jointly with Kate Bartlett
On the Union Finance Committee in 2004

Steve Legg
Has dropped out of the election and will be campaigning for Josh and Kate (I have not yet verified this with Steve)

Shahid Majeed
Currently the Commerce Faculty Student Relations Officer
Commerce Postgraduate Executive Council (COMPEC) President since 2003

Andrew O'Loughlin
Writes the "Hackass" column in Tharunka in 2005
Quoted in Tharunka as not running a serious campaign

James Ye
Running jointly with Rehana Ahmed
Marketing Executive for CUSA (Chinese University Student Alliance) for 2005
Is the LawSoc Mooting Coordinator - Beginners Division for 2005
On the LawSoc Education Committee in 2005

* For the sake of transparency: I am not campaigning for any of these candidates, nor will I be wearing any of their campaign shirts. I have never campaigned in any Guild or Union election before. I consider myself friends with Kate Bartlett, Josh Brandon and Steve Legg and will personally be voting for Josh Brandon and giving my second preference to Kate Bartlett.

I thought this was Steve Legg's final year?

I'd vote Shahid

If you are not an ordinary member of the union (i.e. you have graduated), then you must resign from the Union Board. However, there is an exception to this rule if you are an office bearer (President, Vice-President and Treasurer). So although it is Steve's last year, it would be possible for him to remain on the Union Board - however it seems likely that he will not get elected (as I am 95% sure he has pulled out), so that is irrelevant.

If anyone does have any questions they want to ask about the Union or the election proccess, then I can probably answer them for you.

Also, I highly recommend that people come to hear the election debate at the Library Lawn on Thursday 12-2 (there will be some food provided by the Union).

Sounds like a good idea.

Last year 1,500-2,000 people voted. There are 40,000 students at UNSW. So that means that between 4%-5% of students voted.

I didn't vote last year, I was planning to vote for Kirsten Hunter, however I didn't get the chance, I don't care enough make a special trip to the polling place. I voted in the student guild elections though, only because where you vote is on the way to the buses on anzac parade.
