What are units?

So in Chemistry the subject is usually 2 units, is this measuring it's difficulty or amount of time or work?

Also how many units can you fit into the average school week 9am to 3:15pm? How many units do you need to be eligible for an ATAR score?

It's kind of hard to put into words, but it doesnt have anything to do with difficulty, time or workload per se. Most subjects are worth two units, but some are worth one and they mostly include extension units. SOR has a one unit and two unit course, but that's mainly because religious schools make it compulsory.

You need 10 units of 'Board Developed Courses' to be eligible for an ATAR ...

Some Subjects are content endorsed... While others are VET subjects and only ONE VET subject counts towards an ATAR (If you happen to be doing more than one...) :D

Trust this makes sense!

Each unit is worth 50 marks. So 2 unit maths is worth 100, Ext 1 maths is worth another 50.
Your top 10 units are added (after scaling for difficulty) to give an aggregate out of 500, and this is turned into the ATAR which is, roughly speaking, a ranking.
Each unit should equate to roughly the same number of timetabled periods per week/fortnight. But this is not an indication of the amount of work you do at home.
The number of units you do is determined by you and/or the policy of your school. I would say that 12 in year 11 and 11 in year 12 is fairly typical.
