Hello!

I have a question about pursuing Electrical Engineering at UNSW. I’m particularly interested in electromagnetism, so I was wondering if that aligns well with the course. Also, if I were to attend UNSW, should I aim for the Honours/Masters degree or the regular one? The Honours/Masters course has a selection rank cutoff of 94, whereas the regular one has a cutoff of 90. Do you guys reckon I have a chance of getting into either of these courses?

Here's what I’m currently studying and how I’m performing:
- English ADV: definitely not getting a B6 (I suck at English 😭)
- Maths EXT 1 and 2: expecting a low/mid E4
- Physics: expecting a low B6
- Chemistry: either a high B5 or a low B6

University physics will be nothing like hsc physics. In hsc physics most of it is just memorization, especially module 7 and 8, rather than formulas. Plus we only ever learn very basic formulas for hsc physics.

I am pretty sure you would get in for either of those if you got those marks, (use atar compass). You should apply for
UNSW Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer Scheme or for UNSW gateway if you go to a gateway school, I got a conditional offer for computer engineering at UNSW and they took the required atar for me down to 80 from 90.

Thanks. Apart from specialising a field of study, what is the point of taking the Masters course? I’ve heard of people taking the regular course instead, even though they had an ATAR sufficient to go for masters.

i really don't know why u would wanna do masters instead of just getting into the workforce tbh i had enough of schooling with high school, bachelors fine i'll wait it out but after aint no way i'm doing more school lol

💀 the only required Physics courses at UNSW for EE are PHYS1121 and PHYS1231 which are entirely rote learn LMAO

Don't forget electromagnetism, elec3115

The point of a masters is to go into research. If you don't care about research and just studying the degree to work in the industry, taking the single degree is sufficient. Also, the BE/ME stream is poorly structured in that it doesn't list ELEC3106 (electronics) as a core course even though you need it to be a competent electrical engineer and has a bloat course (ELEC2117) which contribute nothing to your understanding as you cover all its content in more depth and structure in other core courses (all you're doing is giving unsw an extra $1k)
How's the workload at university compared to year 12?
Workload is manageable but highly depends on how well you grasp the content intuitively, like any other thing.

Uni is less workload, even if you're going after HD WAM. For any person interested in EE, I can tell you that DESN1000 is enough reason to avoid taking any engineering degree. Currently contemplating a IPT to Actuarial Studies as a result of how suboptimal the course is.

those type of "professional engineering" classes are sadly needed by engineers australia for accreditation
so soul sucking
