how do i study actually for eng? ik this sounds like a stupid question but genuinely how do u study to get good grades. i feel like my whole hs life i js winged it and hoped the q would fit my writing somewhat.

rn i have an essay i wrote on the 2025 hsc q for common mod but if you asked me to write an essay responding to a diff question or even the same one i wouldnt be able to under exam conditions.

1. how do i actually go about using my time efficiently for eng and maximising my time to get the best marks

2. in terms of assessments, how do i actually study for those? do i memorise my essay? - if so how??

3. i also know people say PRACTICE WRITING TO QUESTIONS - but how would you practice if you don't know ur quotes and analysis off the top of your head.

make a base essay/ a variety of ideas/themes u can talk about, then u just have to practice manipulating what u have to the question which just comes with practice. Then for assessments just practice, hand in stuff for feedback ,repeat and then maybe memorise ideas and base analysis which u can change to the question. First off when I'm practicing essays I use my notes but close to exams, once I've memorised stuff I do it with a timer. I like to keep track of my time where like for example u have 40 mins to write an essay, that means roughly 10mins a body paragraph and 5 mins each for intro and conclusion. So I just keep track of my time to make sure I finish on time

I personally don't memorise essays word for word especially cause the question will change everything up and it's a waste of time but just themes/ideas, techniques analysis for the quotes is sufficient and then just practicing adapting it to the question

hmmm when you say themes/ideas, techniques analysis for the quotes do you memorise quotes and then like a paragraph worth of analysis for them?? like body paragraphs?? i just dont know how to approach practicing when i dont know quotes and analysis for them off the top of head

well yeah but u can just memorise dot points of analysis and the main stuff, as long as ur able to remember everything and all the detail. I usually make QTE tables where I have a bunch of quotes for each theme and then I just memorise a few quotes, their analysis, etc. If u don't know ur quotes and analyse off the top off your head just use these QTE tables (quote, technique, effect) during ur practice

this may or may not be helpful advice, but if you choose your quotes sequentially and analytically then youll tend to remember not just the quotes, but the order of them, and hence your entire paragraph.

don't memorise quotes as disjointed strings of words. they're like little structural pieces that build up to create your beautiful logical essay - so youll notice asap when you forget a piece of analysis

what texts are you doing? if you'd like, i'm happy to tutor you for a few sessions before your assessment

1. keep writing under timed conditions and make sure you understand your ideas rather than just memorising them.

2. dont ever memorise your essay! this is very risky since you could get a question thats no where near what you prepared for. So what i recommend is to have quotes + analysis that is adaptable. Another thing i recommend for boosting marks is using a tripartite structure and conceptual frameworks for your essays this help you 100%.

3. You memorise your quotes and analysis and a base essay and then go ahead and write your essay under timed conditions to a question you havent seen before. This has really helped me in preparation for the hsc since i could identify my gaps and work on them straight away rather than lose marks in the actual exam. What i did before the hsc was have a mock hsc where I did a past paper i havent seen before under timed conditions without any notes or anything with me and have ai mark it with the marking guidelines.

i also agree a lot with what ilovemitski said, your quotes NEED to be integrated into what youre saying rather than it being a sentence that looks like its not supposed to be there or it sounds like a year 8 learning how to write in a peel structure.
