Hi. I am a first year student in this year and i am currently enrolled in an engineering degree. However, after a week of school, i found engineering is not that suitable for me to do. I encountered many problems and difficulties which leads me to a conclusion that i am not capable for doing engine.

Now, i want to change my course to a commerce degree, could anyone here can give me some information whether it is possible for me to change and how i can change. I saw the UAI cut off for commerce in2006 is 93.4 and i got 93.8 in 2005 HSC.

I really want to change becoz i know i will screw up if i just continue studying my current degree. hope u guys can help with it, thx!

I think you need to drop out, defer, and come back in semester 2 this year, or semester 1 next year.

The earliest you can change is semester 2 (but mainly full-fee places are offered then), you'd usually change at the end of this year through UAC.

However, if you have completed at least a semester of uni, your uni marks will be used as well as your UAI in allocating offers. If you dont want that to happen you may have to discontinue your course for the moment

I changed on the first day of O-week, but I think that was ok since international students hadn't enrolled yet. Might be too late now, although you haven't missed much.

So, if i want to change now, who should i have to speak to? Do i need to get a special permission or something else to veryfy that??

You mean i have to drop off all the units of study i am doing in the engine degree and add the subjects of commerce? If i do so, then i will be able to enrolled in yr 2 of the commerce degree in next year?

I doubt you'd be able to drop all of your engineering subjects as some of them are probably requirements for your degree (ie. you have to do them).

ok well stas' advice is the best

i don't know about your situation but i was able to drop core units when i was at UWS doing B Community Welfare and pick up units from B Social Science (the co-ord said 'as long as your sure you are going to transfer - ask your co-ordinater if he will allow you to drop all your core units and pick up commerce ones).

so yeah stas' advice is the best try to drop your current units and pick up commerce-related ones...E-Mail your course co-ord NOW, because i think the date for dropping without penalty is SOON.

Then at the end of the year (or end of this semester if you can mid-year transfer) transfer over into B Commerce (make sure you maintain a good enough GPA even though your UAI is good enough to get you in) then you can apply for academic credit (once your a B commerce student) for the commerce units you already have done.

the deadline to add units is the 17th (thanks Templar)

And yes you can drop core units. I'm not doing ECMT (A core unit of B economics) this year as im trying to transfer into B Economic and Social Sciences. I replaced ECMT with a core unit from BEcSocSci.

However, only change your units if you are failry confident you'll get the transfer. You'd probally need a D average to have a chance. If you dont get the transfer, you'll be a year behind in your engineering degree.

You can either defer for a year and start fresh in commerce next year.

Alternatively, you just might be able to do some commerce subjects (highly unlikely). However, you will need to get approval from both associate dean of engineering (easy) and the course coordinator/associate dean from commerce (very hard) to attend commerce courses that aren't in the engineering handbook (don't think there is any anyway). Then you will have some 1st year work done when you start again next year.

In short, there is no way you can change now. You have to apply via UAC to transfer in September or roundabout. Your best option now is seriously to defer engineering if you don't feel that you can handle it.

And last day to enrol in a subject is this Friday ie 17th.

Are you sure you're a local student? You don't sound like one.

I am sorry for making some confusions. Well, I will start describing my situation all over again.

I am a first year student and currrently I am studying a bachleor of engineering degree, (not combined). After a week of school, I have found difficulties in my study and I think engineering is not suitable for me.

Therefore, I decide to change my current degree to a Commerce degree. I have visited the student information centre and asked about this. They said I have to gain approval from the faculty of enginneering for dropping off my current units of study before applying the commerce subjects. And I have to apply through UAC later for transferring to a Commerce degree.

I just want to ask if this is a correct and safe method to do it. Also, if there's anything elso I have to note about before i proceed my subjects changing.
