hi there,

im considering civil engineering at unsw because of the likelihood of getting employment at the end of university, and because it is a reasonably paid profession and such..

can anyone shed light on the other streams of engineering available at unsw, and whether they can beat civil engineering, in terms of job demand, pay and profession?

ALSO, is engineering at unsw like engineering at sydney, where everyone does a common first year, before specialising?? i just read this in a syd brochure... is this true?..wt

thanks :)

All engineering programs at UNSW: http://www.eng.unsw.edu.au/prospect/ug/areas.htm

UNSW Engineering started the common first year for 2006. This lets students get a taste of engineering before being locked in to any one particular specialisation (and realising they don't like it and can't transfer out after first year).

are you serious?

so we don't have to choose which stream we want to go to (e.g. civil, architectural, electronic, electrical, chemical etc) until the end of first year, i.e. 2006????

so how come we have to enrol in a specific branch of engineering, at unsw?

thanks heaps.

Engineering at unsw has a flexible entry exactly like usyd. However, in order to major in second year you have to do well. It does not guarantee a specialization if you did badly in your first year.

Engineering(major) combined with another degree(minor) will have to major in first year. However, mechanical abd aerospace are in the same stream. Thus you can transfer between the two without penalties.

Civil is crap and certainly Mining and Petroleum are in higher demands, seriously. They get to be paid more as well. I guess a lot of people figured that out, thus the courses had no more vacancies for the Final Round.

Cheers

ok, i chose civil engineering and got accepted into it...

so ur saying that regardless of wot stream u choose to enrol in, everyone does a COMMON first year.. i.e. same subjects and such?

so wot is the point of enrolling in a specific stream, if there is the option to choose at the end of year 1 and (like me) ur not quite sure which stream would be best?

There are common subjects (eg maths, physics, computing) however you do have to choose a couple of electives in first year which should be related to the engineering you want to do

ok thanks grimreaper..

um, is it possible to transfer from, say, civil engineering to petroleum or mining engineering?

Civil and Mining Engineering are both in huge demand worldwide so you'll get a job in both. Choose what you would prefer doing.

Mining - a course with probably less than 50 people
Civil - a course with probably 200 people
Which one's easier to fill up?

The only perk about Mining is the pay, and the enjoyment of it if you so happen to adore spending time down in mines, but I can't see how you would. No one wants to spend their entire life secluded down in some remote location. You'll go crazy I tells ya!

alot of engineers will end up in management and spend a good amount of years there before retiring - essentially the same environment as many other types of engineers

you will not be in some random secluded town for your whole career.
please, get a clue before typing bs on the forum

i didnt understand that either...

but from wot my friend told me..

u have to choose which branch of engineering u want to go to before accepting admission or enrolling....

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU MIGHT ONLY HAVE SOME COURSES (CORE OR ELECTIVE) THAT ARE SIMILAR TO OTHER BRANCHES OF ENGINEERING DONE BY OTHER STUDENTS, BUT THAT ESSENTIALLY EACH STREAM IS UNIQUE...?

Correct since you didn't you a flexi-degree.

Aerospace and Mechanical, you can switch between the two.

Others have common first semester, but different electives at second.

So if you're going to change you have to do well in first and ask the Dean.

Only flexi students get to major in second year. Thus they get 1 year of trying out things.

Mining and Petroleum make the most money as for first year graduates(80-130k because they are in shortage. For 2005 graduates there were only a total of 15 for mining).

If you want to do civil then do it! You will get the same money if you work longer. However, if you want to earn millions then you have to do business or a mechanical engineering degree.
