I think there could be some merit to this part of the plan. China is a bit of a bad actor on trade and the US needs to draw a line. Most US Presidents wouldn't be able to implement harsh tariffs on China because the US population would quickly sour on them. However, Trump, with his unique branding and appeal could rally his supporters to hold the line.

Trump might be utterly incompetent in many regards, but he is undeniably a great marketer and salesman. It uniquely positions him to deal with certain issues such as this one. It's just a shame he doesn't have the self awareness to understand his strengths and weaknesses and act accordingly.

Like, imagine if Trump had great relations with the EU, other Allies and more "on the fence" countries. He could have used all that to really hurt China that much more. China so far has failed to live up to it's potential and it has weaknesses especially coming off the damage from their COVID response. It's a shame Trump cant get it together and use his unique strengths to their full potential here.

it being his last term also means he doesn't have to worry about any potential damages that would've stopped him from being reelected, this mass-tariff placing was probably his plan from the beginning, whether its a good or bad plan we'll see in the future ahah
