Usage of Sydney Library computers (1 Viewer)

I'm in Usyd Fisher library computers at the moment and was just watching a youtube video. Someone (not a usyd stafff) came up to me and said "Are you playing games? You could give up your computer to someone who needs it". The first thing that came to my mind was ... "what the fuck are you talking about. I already had my waiting on queue. Now go wait for another computer."


Are there Usyd library computer policies that say that i was not allowed to watch a video. It was not pornographic or offensive material.

I mean... i've seen people with just their msn opened and chatting. And what about those who leave their jackets behind, go outside for a lunch and then come back?

I don't think there is any official rule but I can see why people might get a little frustrated if people look like they're just messing around while others need to do actual work. Nevertheless, if there really is no rule then who cares. Everybody just has to wait their turn.

Just out of a twinge of guilt, I usually try to look a little productive with Blackboard open or a document but still chatting on MSN.

That person probably just got frustrated but once again, if there is no hard and fast rule, then too bad.

Do an IT subject and you get access to computer labs and free internet anytime. Also free printing of 225 pages per IT subject, I have 675 this semester.

The worst occasion was when I was in Burkit Ford, on a Word document while discussing about report writeup with lab partner next to me. Someone asked if we were doing work and if not, whether we could vacate the computer. There was a 6 Word document on the desktop, at least ask someone browsing the internet.

Seriously, if you want to watch youtube/game, go home and do it. Most people want to use the computers to study. I'm pretty sure of the many other computers that were there, few were using MSN.

I would say the same to those who want to use a computer to study. Go home and do it. Or if these people are doing their assignment on the last minute, that's their fault.

As far as Usyd's free bandwidth allows, anyone should be able to view whatever they please. And besides, Usyd's free bandwidth is only about 7mb a day ... that would only allow one to watch a couple of vids.

I just find it rude for people watching over your shoulders and say that you dont deserve to use a computer.

The ones on level 3 have a policy which says you're only supposed to use them for learning purposes, otherwise I think the others are fair game.

It depends on which computer you use, as different computers have different policies.

For example, the catalogue computers in Fisher make you click on an agreement before you use them that they are only for use on the University Intranet and nothing external.

The ICT Policy regarding games is outlined here http://www.usyd.edu.au/ICTRPolicy/faqs.htm#Five but it doesn't say anything about videos - have a read of that its pretty interesting.

i sometimes browse net on uni comps...but it is mostly intermittent procrastination when doing assignment

what kind of douche looks at someone elses computer screen to see what they're doing anyway?

From where i was sitting, the computer was positioned that the monitor was facing the queue. So the people lining up for computers could see what i was browsing. I understand how people would get pissed at me for watching a video when they could use the computer to finish their assignment. But i think i deserve the same privacy as someone using a computer located in a corner.

yeah, but what if they really needed the computer to study, but dont have the computer and internet access at home?
but either way, if i waited in line for a chance to use the computer and use it to muck around and go on bos, then ill still do it.
dont really care if they tell me off about it, but luckily it hasnt come to that stage yet

Hmm I downloaded a 20MB file in one day (well one minute) and nothing happened not even a speed cap.

This was through the IT network though. It was an eBook for 'study' purposes.
