Hi all!

I'm planning to do comm/sci at either usyd or unsw, majoring in marketing and psychology [although this might change when i actually start them..] and I was wondering - I've heard that psychology is better in nsw, and that comm is practically the same, with each uni being better in different majors. However I heard that marketing is better in usyd..

so is that true? and if so, by a lot? cause i went to both info days and the usyd marketing lecturer did do a better job by a lot, but i wouldn't wanna just choose on my experience..

and i was thinking that i could continue doing psych after i graduated, [depending on how good i was], considering that unsw has no quota for honours as long as you keep up ur gpa, then would you suggest going to usyd or unsw?

the course at UNSW is a year shorter, if that matters. You do less units overall, which is good if you want to focus on those two majors, but not if you want to do some other units and possibly get a third major.

I'm doing Sci/Comm @ USYD, majoring in Psych for Science, and I came to USYD really for the above reason as well as the TSP program (which they apparently also have at UNSW, but I didn't know that then ).

I'm not sure about Marketing between the 2 unis, sorry, but yeah if you just want two majors, UNSW is very good because its a year shorter, their Psychology department is very well respected (usyd kinda seems to be playing catchup by hiring heaps of lecturers from UNSW), as is their Commerce degree.

Marketing is a lot better at usyd, especially this year and onwards. We have an excellent range of subjects and our marketing major won't restrict you purely to marketing (also will allow you to go into the advertising, marketing research and PR fields as well).

Commerce degree is pretty much the same here and there.
Are you planning to become a psychologist or a marketer? If a marketer, then it doesnt matter where u get ure psyc major from

edit: out of interest who was the marketing lecturer who took you at usyd>?

crap. seriously? ah. trust me to give up and only read your post now haha

oh well. i put nsw. hopefully that doesnt make *too* much of a difference.. i'm not sure what i wanan do yet - marketing is just a fall back plan for psychology i think.. cause i might be completely crap at psychology - and then i dunno.. if i couldnt be a full psychologist, i dunno what i'd do with a psych degree..

but yeah, just another q, which is also a little late to ask, but hopefully you can calm my fears somewhat.. do you have to be really creative to do marketing? =/

and yeah, i dunno who that guy was, even though he told us his name twice yesterday [ i think it wasthe same guy].. but dunno, he had brown hair i think, and an americanish? accent.. and he outlined the moustrap scenario? dunno whether you can tell from that description.. :)

edit: what did you mean by limiting yourself to marketing? =/ im worried now

From the 3 dozen uni students and teachers i've asked, the overwhelming consensus seems to be that unsw comm pwnz usyd comm. But you're doing science too and isnt usyd better at that?

1) Yes, you have to be creative for marketing. not 'very' creative, but you have to be creative. Innovation is the key, if you can't be innovative, think quickly and come up with new ideas then marketing isn't for you. I guess you could work in marketing, but you'll never be getting the top jobs
2) to be a practicing psychologist, you'd need to complete an honours year from memory.
3) Don't know him, but the "build a better mousetrap" scenario is very commonly used. I've never had a yank.
4) Many uni marketing majors focus solely on marketing. I see UNSW has some new ones as well, but you won't be able to go into advertising from a pure marketing major. USYD has more options - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing Research and Marketing related jobs
5) You could always go for USYD in the late round or transfer if you dont like the unsw course.

ive never heard that consensus.
this has been discussed hundreds of times in the forums and the general consensus is that:
Accounting - UNSW
Finance - USYD
Applied finance - UNSW
Econometrics - USYD
IR (not HRM) - USYD
Marketing - USYD
Government - USYD
Management - UNSW
Political economy - USYD

Others: tied.

And the smarter consensus is that it doesnt matter where you go. The degrees are virtually the same. Neither is 'better'. Except for maybe IR @ USYD; Government @ USYD; Political Economy @ USYD. If you dont plan on majoring in these, then it doesnt matter where u go

You don't have to be creative in all areas though. Some of the more stats based research is just having a knack with data, and interpretation skills in general.

(having said that, the creative side of Marketing is much more fun, in my personal opinion!)

If you end up doing Marketing at Usyd, make sure you join Select, the marketing society. *cough, shameless plug*

the comm building at UNSW that is bein built has this passage about the building and it ends with, this innovation strengthens the FCE as the leader of business faculties in Australasia.
UNSW also got the most business grants out of any uni in Aust

Ok a few features that differentiate marketing at UNSW from USyd.

Marketing @ UNSW
- Links with business through co-op program
- Links with Advertising Federation of Australia giving students access at student rates to their events
- Students who undertake particular marketing subjects can qualify for Certificate of Market Research that's administered by the Aust Market & Social Research Society

Those are all I'm aware of (I was considering doing a second major in marketing) but USyd might already have the same or similar initiatives in place

Edit:
There's also a more specialised Commerce degree in Services Marketing (tourism and hospitality management). The entry criteria is a bit different though. This degree requires students to undertake a Diploma of Tourisn and Hospitality services. Also there's a compulsory work experience component

Sarah, marketing @ USYD links with Australian Marketing INstitute giving student rates, etc.
However, yes, marketing @unsw does have the co-op advantage,
