UWS (physio) vs. USYD Health Science (1 Viewer)

I'm at a cross roads as to which degree to put as my first preference. I live right near UWS Campbelltown to do Physio there and could probably get in with 5 extra bonus points, but Sydney is more prestigious in that it is ranked 37 in the world and UWS doesn't get a mention in the top 1100.

I can't get into Applied Science (physio) at USYD because my UAI was only 91.05, but if I do health sciences at USYD I may do Masters Physio afterwards.

Do you think it matters where you get your degree in terms of better job prospects and options?

I'm sure it doesnt matter where you do physio degree at. You all come out on the same boat. Though, if you take the MPhys at usyd after your healthsciences degree, you come out with 2 degrees and one of them is a post grad. And as a result, when you apply for a graduate position, you get paid not at physio level 1 but at level 2 or 3, which is like 3-4 grand extra a yr. So not sure if that makes a diff to you.

But from memory, isnt an undergrad phyt at uws 5yrs? if thats the case, you wont lose any time doing a health sciences degree for 3 yrs and transferring to the master program which is 2 extra yrs, providing you meet the gpa and subject pre reqs

Hi, i suggest you got to UWS. Reputation does not matter much in healthcare, people will still come to your practice even if you went to UWS. The usyd masters is still undergrad condensed into 2 years so its hard going, where as uws's program still teaches you some physio in the early years. Also to get into usyd's you need to maintain a 5.5 gpa, now they say thats a credit average, but in essence you need to get half all your grades in credits and the other half in distinctions. Thats pretty hard to do in anatomy, physiology units. Also its full fee for masters and costs about 40k + the 3 years of your undergrad. Not sure if this is the case at UWS. I'd definetly choose UWS if you can't get into undergrad at usyd.

Spdr20 is correct you do start of with higher pay, but i don't think a few grand extra a year will ofset your higher hecs debt. Also its not specialisation postgrad masters like just a normal general physio degree.

UWS is a B Heath science/Masters Physio, so you end up with a masters anyway

and for the usyd thingo, you need to maintain 4.5 GPA, not 5.5. (like 65% i think)

the masters isnt really the same as a conventional masters. Its a graduate entry to a physio degree if you didn't do undergrad physio. to specialise you would have to do a conventional physio masters.

"Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHS) students commencing in 2009 and onwards are offered a guaranteed place in the graduate entry master’s (GEM) programs upon gaining a minimum credit grade average (WAM 65+) in the BHS. Study in prescribed majors or particular units is a prerequisite for entry into some programs."

from the Master's of physio web page:
Applicants for the Master's of Physiotherapy program must hold or expect to hold a relevant Bachelor's degree from an approved institution, with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.5 or greater (approximately equivalent to a credit average or better).

so for BHS guaranteed place u need 65 which is half credits half distinctions

but for masters of physio i guess you need minimum of 4.5 or greater but not guaranteed
