That's an old list, some of the Australian unis in there are no longer eligible (i.e. Macquarie).

Goes to show how much an institution's longevity is valued in the education sector.

Justified though.

The stigma with UWS will probably disappear if 10-15 years.
Not sure, MQ definitely had a stigma at one point which has disappeared but UTS for example is only a year older than UWS (but admittedly has a long history prior to becoming a uni) yet has much less stigma.

Most people who look down on UTS would also look down on Macquarie. (MQ is now 50 years old)

I think the fact that there are no younger unis (with their main campus) in Sydney is a contributing factor.

2014 uni rankings were released yesterday from QS:

Universities within NSW (National Rank) (Global Rank)

1. University of Sydney (3) (37)
2. University of NSW (5) (48)
3. Macquarie University (9) (254)
4. University of Newcastle (10) (257)
5. University of Technology, Sydney (11) (264)
6. University of Wollongong (12) (283)
7. University of Western Sydney (28) (651-700)
8. University of New England (31) (701+)

Actually I've looked a bit further and apparently UWS is pretty good with Arts and Psychology (top 150).

Also note that this is from QS, there other ranking systems which oscillate quite a bit between the systems. Have a look at Shanghai's ranking for instance.
