can some1 give me an idea of what we need to know for the chapter binaries and variables apart from visual, eclipsing and spectroscopic binaries?

i need like the overall big picture, coz i have no idea atm.

also, for a spectroscopic binary, the spectra lines split because of one star moving toward, hence a blueshift and one star moving away, creating a redshift. Isn't this similar to a rotating star in that one part of the star is moving toward, while another part is moving away due to its rotation?

if so, how do u know whether it is a binary system or just a rotating star?

well, the shift is proportional to the velocity of the source relative to Earth. The star rotates alot slower than it moves. So the spectral lines observed due to rotation are probably alot less shifted than the ones observed from translational movement.
Other than that, i wouldn't have a clue.

Can't help with the binaries and variables though, i dont know astro.
