No - whatever way you mathematically solve this problem you are going to have to use the quadratic formula.

This is because when you solve for y=0, there is also a negative value of t. Obviously this is physically impossible, but I suppose it's the price we have to pay for using maths in physics :p

Anyway, the quadratic formula's not that hard to remember is it?
