Yeah, I'm in my 2nd year of Vet Science at Usyd.
It's endlessly interesting but a very intense course. You definitely need to have a strong interest in medicine and animals to keep yourself motivated, because you're looking at 25-30 contact hours/week and ontop of that many many hours of study at home.
My primary advice to you is make sure it's absolutely 100% the thing you want to spend your life doing. Vets work incredibly hard for very little money, particularly in Australia and particularly in Small Animal practice. If you're not 100% deadset on the animal component, I would suggest medicine because you'll get paid alot more and recieve much more recognition for the work you do. IMO medicine would be significatly easier also, because you only learn about one species, and as a vet you learn surgery, dentistry, anaesthesia, pharmacology, general practice, business, conservation biology, genetics etc... wheres to be a human doctor you spend many years specialising in only one specific area of medicine.
Best advice I can give to you is:
- Start now on your Vet Science Commitment Form (found on the website - you will need to fill out one of these to apply). This is just all about work experience you have done in both small and large animal practice, and I even did a WIRES course and worked as a farmhand, joined the Animal Welfare League etc. This form is huge component of whether you'll get in or not! They're looking not just for people who get the marks, but people who are dedicated to this kind of work.
- Make sure you're interested in biology. We do a little bit of Chemistry and a tiny bit of Physics in vet too.
- Study your buttocks off to get the ATAR and good luck in the STAT test.
- But biggest thing is get a heap of work experience under your belt! Often actually being a vet is far from most people's perception of what it is like.
