The movie is just about as similar to the book as i have ever seen...slight difference at the end, which is needed for the movies sake

The book was better, but I didnt like the lack of chapters: there was never an appropriate place to stop and sleep. I thought the movie killed it a bit, I didn't think it was done v. well, but Josh was hot, and Kirsten is pretty (which is probably why people like it).

I fell asleep in lost in translation.

Lost in translation was good at first viewing.

Repeat viewings show that Scarlet cannot act that well (as in she does the same type of acting in all the same movies and even uses the same methods) and that a story is lacking.
Exactly!..So you understand why I fell asleep...? :p

That chick is the female Hugh Grant re: ability and movie choice.

i loved the virgin suicides, i thought it was amazingly directed. similarly, lost in translation was a thought provoking movie that was almost perfect

Lost in Translation is very hit and miss. People who like it tend to love it, people who don't hate it. I'm sorry you fall into the latter category. In any case your observation on Hugh Grant and Scarlett Johansson is flawed at the very best.

1. Hugh Grant is an underrated actor- there, I said it. He may be a character actor, but so too was Humphrey Bogart. Sure he only ever plays one type of character, but no one could do what he does better.

2. Scarlett Johansson is 20. Her achievement at this stage of her career has been exceptional. She's not the finished article yet, but I think she'll still have a lot of growing to do.

3. Movie choice?? Hugh Grant's cv is almost exclusively romcoms. Scarlett Johansson has a much more varied selection which includes teen comedy, goofball horror, drama, and this year action as well.

scarlett johansson is a fine actress and i would like to give her a child.

the virgin suicides was ok, but but lost in translation was a massive leap forward in terms of overall maturity and especially characterisation; people argue that it's too vague but i think it achieves a lot from what it leaves out and what's unsaid; very few films had me thinking about the characters for days after like that one did... eh, i'm pretty much repeating what the reviews said, so i'll stop. in fact, i like it more than all her daddy's films save the conversation.

I'm going to completely disagree. :) Lost in Translation builds on every subsequent viewing. It's virtually flawless.

the film isn't about a 'story'???

rep to icecream for mentioning the conversation
it deserves its own thread for being genius and vastly underrated
though i'd have to say as much as i love lost in translation i prefer pretty much any movie sofia's father made in the 70s

I have also read the book and not seen the movie. i found the bok to be very depressing, which I am aware that it should be. It wasn't a favourite of mine, but it wasn't crap either. An as for Lost In Translation...it is such a good movie. I loved it. So beautiful. the scenes where Johanson is in and around the temples is so beautiful. Also, I liked the fact that there was this underlying sexual thing going on between him and her, but you never saw anything like that...it's good when that happens,
