I am confused about viruses which are spread through e mails. If the e mail is opened, the virus doesn't spread? It only spreads when you download the attachment? Is that right?

That's correct, it's generally worms, that are part of the attachment, which when you download them and execute them (open them) then it starts doing it's work ;)

But to be safe, dont use outlook express...

If you must use outlook or outlook express then:

1. Turn off automatic allowing of attachments that may contain viruses... Option available in Security tab in Options.
2. Turn off auto-view and only open messages you want to read.
