It's basically the positioning of two ideas together. So it's the analysis of all issues that arise from that. That means both their similarities and differences. it can also reveal things like irony, or innuendo depending on the circumstances.

A visual metaphor is basically a metaphor in image form. Where an image actually stands for something else.
