Did anyone go? It was a great day, an amazing show of student power.

I started at UTS, we went up to Pitt St, and then looped back around when we met the group from UNSW, and met up with the USyd group at Railway Sq and then we marched down Broadway.

Then when we met at USyd we had great entertainment. It was a great day with excellent speakers and a great atmosphere.

There's about 150,000 university students just in Sydney which means for those 3 per cent that turned out, they are very welcome to continue to pay student union fees if they want to do so voluntarily.

But even better news for the other 97 per cent is that they will now have a choice as to how they spend up to $600 which will no longer be taken away from them without choice.''

NTB you fit into the 'omg I love VSU' rather than the 'VSU is going to happen and I'm for it' group... The former group is perhaps the most disgusting considering the negative impacts it will have on certain people (ie not you), so I guess it doesn't matter anyway.

If VSU were to come into place, and the union folded, would you donate the $500 you would have spent on union fees to charity?

Asquithian, I pay taxes, I support the wider community. Why should I give them ANOTHER layer of support within the university run by students who would rather spend millions on fighting VSU than adapting to VSU to become a viable option for most students.

Don't tell me they won't have enough money for "critical services" when at the moment they can run critical services, have a huge campaign, and at the same time fund some clubs which are frankly stoopid "LOL LETS GET TOGETHER AND WATCH SUBSIDIZEd ANIME".

I am more than happy to pay extra fee's to look after people in the university who may truely need a bit of extra help, but you're making it sound like support for vsu makes you a monster, like i don't care about other people. I care about other people, i care about the people who are getting ripped off by this union bullshit.

Well you claim they benefit others, just as charities do, and my point is that 99% of people who support USU would answer no to the above question, thus verifying that they too have selfish motivations because they wouldn't give the money up if there was nothing in it for them.

this 3% argument is crap. just because people didnt protest doesnt mean they dont care. most people would accept, conservatively, 40% of Australians didnt support the war in Iraq (it was probably more, but thats not the point) lets take the adult population to be roughly 15million Australians, 6 million people didnt protest, yet 40% (at least) of people didnt support the war.

3% of protestors, does NOT mean only 3% of people support USU. it may mean only 3% have a very strong passion for it, but i've never heard of any pro-VSU rallies and all u pro-VSU people wouldnt argue 0% of people support VSU, would u now

edit: on this other crap of 'oh, shock horror, some money goes to political causes' last-time i checked in Australia, the taxpayers give money to political parties to run their election campaigns

Would you truly pay for fees for someone else if it wasnt warranted to you? Im not for or against this, actually im quite nonchalant and uncaring.

i'm pretty sure in england. possibly in america (but they might be more the funds are taken directly out of uni fees). i'm not sure where else, but i doubt it's just those 2.

Asquithian - Again I ask you, how exactly are people who "REALLY NEED THE SERVICES" going to be disadvantaged when unions are so rich they can run a huge anti-vsu campaign, pay for societies that no one cares about (very few).
