That's an interesting comment from someone doing commerce/law.

I never said IB was the only option for Comm/Law students. It is however one of the most desired career paths for Com/Law students, and a vast majority of Com/Law students apply to investment banks for graduate jobs.

I think you will find that the most desired career path for any combination with a law degree is a legal career path. The second degree is compulsory for undergrad law students at most universities.

yeah I heard its hard to get a legal career from a law degree. I heard less than 50% of law grads ever become solicitors.

My guess would be Commerce is the safe/secure option which isn't so risky- hence that for the parents.

It all counts for shit if someone does Com/Law for the parents, and ends up hating the job they land...

Yeah OP sounds like he's doing comm/law for rentz. On the other hand to expect year 12 students to know what they want to do for a living is a bit much.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

One of my friend's older siblings did Com/Law (pressured by asian parents of course), hated it but did reasonably well and landed a job in a top law firm. She totally hated working there, and is now coming back to university to do a completely different degree...

man easiest way... do your commerce degree and take extra classes in business law, property, equity etc. and youre set. i mean why spent more time and effort doing criminal law and other crap that you will probably never use in your life again.

im saying this only if you wnna be in the business world ... i mean criminal law does help if you want to be a barrister or prosecutor

You have higher potential earnings by doing Commerce than say Medicine, your parents make no sense.

There's also the fact that Asian parents would never kick their kid outta their house.

Asian parents go by potential earnings as a measure of success ?

Medicine > Commerce

0.1 % of landing an awesome commerce job paying very well.
Medicine, you're guaranteed a job, and even the 'lowly' GP registrars get $110/hour. (not that I think they are lowly, but misguided people on this forum do).

Yeah they do, I did a survey on it once.

97.13% of Asian respondents with a dependent at University between the ages of 17 and 21 said they judged success by potential earnings.

See, I can make up statistics, too.

I disagree. Medicine may pay more than commerce on average, for low level/graduate jobs, but the top say 10th percentile of medical practitioners will never reach the levels that the top 10th percentile of people in commerce/business fields reach. Whens the last time a medico was paid 120 million bonus? or even a 12 million bonus? And not just Bankers and Traders. Theres the 700K+ average salary of audit partners, the millions of CFOs and the high 6ers of the Controllers. I think that the mean salary of commerce jobs may be lower, but the variance is very very large compared to med.

But thats understandable considering the many low level commerce jobs compared to Med where the lowest you get is probably a graduate HMO or something.

The 110/hour is a fallacy I think. I believe thats how much income is charged for their, not what they receive in salary. In which case its very low considering at accounting firms, Co-ops who haven't finished uni yet have CO rates of $150 per hour. Please correct me if I'm wrong

I agree with you on the 'lowly' GP point. Whats up with people in general dissing GPs anyway. Its always like "OMGZ I want to be a specialist!!!!" Tools. general practice is a specialisation.

As for the point made earlier about Law and money making prestige, I think it is not entirely contradictory that Law is prestigious despite being paid shit in Australia relative to other professions. A lot of our culture flows from the US, and in the US Law makes shitloads.
