from hsc 2022, can anyone explain please? im still confused after reading solutions

just did this paper (haven’t marked yet but I assume this isn’t how the solutions do it), but the way I did it was to create a vector r defined as the projection of u perpendicular to v, and hence r+p=u, which you can sub in, and then from here the proof is pretty trivial
