A WIDENING gulf between local and foreign university students is creating segregated classes, cultural cliques and religious ghettos, raising fears of a backlash on campuses.

International education is a $12.5 billion industry, and foreign students' fees account for an average 15 per cent of universities' overall funding, but a higher education experts warns of "informal but real segregation".

Professor Simon Marginson, from the Centre for Higher Education at the University of Melbourne, said local students tended to work off campus and were not active in student life, and international students spent most of their time on campus, generally in the library.

While the atmosphere on campuses generally supported foreign students, Professor Marginson said: "So you've got this odd situation with the local students half-disengaged in a way I've never really seen before. The international student industry runs off the back of a reasonably strong local system which presumes a healthy relationship with the local students … all of that has become the marketing pitch. That's the flashpoint that worries me more than any other - that it could spring back into resentment."

Almost two-thirds of international students are from Asia, and many have no contact with local students. Eric Pang, president of the National Liaison Committee for International Students in Australia, said foreign students were not given a strong welfare system and had to rely on peers for support, yet were accused of failing to integrate. Many had told the committee: "There's not much international students can learn from Australia in terms of culture, or in terms of English. After all, the standard of English of Australian students is not high anyway."

Connie Zhang, a Chinese student studying commerce at the University of Sydney, said last night: "We don't really hang out with the locals. In the first few years I tried to get along with them, but it's kind of difficult. In the third year I just hung out with

international students." Her friend Hua Feng said some international students lacked the confidence to speak in English. "It's a totally different world."

The National Union of Students president, Angus McFarland, said vice-chancellors had discussed with him how "cultural cliques" and "religious ghettos" could be overcome. Mixing in the classroom sometimes prompted complaints from both sides: international students complained they were marginalised and domestic students complained poor language skills adversely affected group progress.

He said student associations, underfunded because of voluntary student unionism, could no longer afford to organise sufficient events to encourage mixing.

But universities contacted by the Herald said integration was a priority. The University of Sydney defended its International Student Support Unit, and the University of NSW, where 23 per cent of students are from overseas, pointed to a mandate on integration in laboratories and group work. Professor Marginson said internationalisation was supposed to enrich universities and create cultural and intellectual links, as well as bring in much-needed revenue. But it did not appear to be meeting its stated aim.

" We're certainly not addressing local disengagement, and we're not making use of international students as a bridge to Asia," he said. "We're not helping the local students to become more Asia-focused and become more competent culturally."

There's not going to be much intergration when:

1.) There is a substantial proportion of foreign students and
2.) Locals generally look down on them.

And.. it doesn't help when a significant proportion of people believe that "proud to be australian" means "foreigners are shit"

LOL.

but seriously, how could you expect any1 to integrate with foreign students? most of Australia foreign students are from far east Asia or south Asia. even local Asians don't integrate with foreign Asians and neither do local Indians integrate with foreign Indians. how could you possibly expect anyone else to integrate with them?

Language barrier is a big problem, I would probably be a lot more inclined to make friends with international students if I wasn't put off by how awkward and painstaking a conversation can be when neither of you is really understanding everything being said.

It says there are only 15% funding comes from internationals?

so you're telling me i put up with 60-70% internationals in my course for only 15% funding...

That's gotta be wrong.

You've picked the wrong course, I bet you there will be almost none if you do something like history.

An idea:
Build recreational facilities on campus. e.g; Table Tennis, Table Football, Pool, Air Hockey, Chess, Backgammon, etc.

"who gives a shit?

if you don't like whitey or can't afford to pay his uni fees, to go uni in your own shithole instead ff"

OMG you're a freaking genius, I hope you become PM of Australia someday. That's the spirit f^%k the Asian Pacific, We'll dream our way into trade and prosperity.

It's quite a shame really

I see this divide everyday, It seems that people see the foreign students as some sort of Alien creature and that's not good for this countries image.

Some people of you racist redneck folks may say "oh who cares about the yellow and brown gooks!?".

Well those "gooks" keep many of these courses running and I have seen entire courses filled with internationals, For example data mining is almost entirely staffed with internationals. Plus once these foreign students go back to their countries they will be running the future of these nations and their experience in Australia will determine how they perceive Australia and it may even influence important business decisions.

Most Asian students I've met have pretty shit personalities. Mabye it's just the language barrier.

My dads a lecturer, and very liberal and compassionate. Nonetheless, he was complaining to us today that in his course comprising 95% chinese students, most of them act like they're 16, fucking useless and rude.

Got 3 internationals doing my degree.

I dislike them. Not because they're international, but because they act as though they don't have to participate, that them being there should be enough for them to pass. And they're arrogant.

Fuck off.

It's not BS it's a fact.

You do the math

China GDP $3.25 trillion

Japan GDP $4.346 trillion

South Korea $981.900 billion

Australia $718.4 billion

So who do you think has more to lose?
