But Eastrern Europe never chose communism. It was imposed upon them. Surely that at best meek acceptance of brutal authoritarianism would make it difficult for the economic theory to thrive, much in the same way that there are problems with implementing democracy and all the other supposedly good things that the invading forces brought to Iraq and Afghanistan...

Valid point. If you ignore that democracy was imposed on the West by an invading Army.
