Hey, I was wondering if anyone out there can give me a hand. I've been accepted to study medicine at UNSW and I was just wondering if anyone could give me a couple of tips on what I need to take with me. I have a laptop.. I also got some paper and pens but other than that I have no idea. Are there any necessities I don't know about? Also I'll be living in Golstein college, is there anything special I'll need for that?

If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it.. I have absolutely no idea!

Oh and by the way.. Just a quick question. I enrolled in the foundations and the society and health courses etc, is that all I needed to do?

Sorry for being a pain and thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out =o)

all you really need is yourself and a sense of humour...ok, not quite true, pen/paper are good too. i don't know about living in college, but that's probably all you need to worry about for now, and most of the stuff for that would be fairly self explanatory, including a natural tolerance to alcohol ;). med equipment will sort itself out, faculty/2nd yrs will be on hand to explain/demonstrate/share accumulated wisdom. s'all good.

having enrolled in the 2 courses for each semester, you should be pretty much set up. i can't remember when it pops up, but i think part of that process includes giving your tax file number... they're always good, means you can do hecs... all in all, i'm rambling and you sound set up. :)
PS if you live in sydney, it could be convenient to get your student card before o-week to avoid the queues, and if you have a moment in oweek, leave the college one and come to the main one!

I'd recommend getting a folder or filing system of some sort. (Sorry, I sound really boring and practical =P). Because everything's just handed out to you, without separate subjects, you might take a while to set up an organising system that works for you, but folders and those post-it flags are pretty useful.

At some point, the establishment will tell you that you need a lab coat. Get it from Mathews newsagency, they're the cheapest. Also latex gloves for anatomy, but you won't be doing anything for at least 3 or 4 weeks.

Do not buy a clinical coat (different from a labcoat, these you need from medsoc bookshop) unless you've been allocated to St Vincent's.

Living in college... depends how you like your living standards?
A bar fridge always comes in handy.. hehe...

Hope that helps, and welcome to the family =)

Yep, you will need a stethoscope. You won't actually be doing much with it until September-ish so there's not that big a rush.

Oh, and I think Lexicographer's getting a bit shirty about the unsw-med posts being shunted here, so leave any other q's on the unsw med board. (Sorry Robert :p).

Haha well I do like my shirts.

Yes we do, but I prefer to keep thread movement minimal to avoid confusing posters.

No no, I'm glad people have started thinking of medland before unsw>medicine instead of the other way around, as used to happen.

But unsw>medicine is still there. :)

thanks fosweb, just bought it today.

the cheapest one cost A$15 but is used mainly by nurses and paramedics. So i got the cheapest one that doctors and students doctors themselves use. That cost me A$29.20

I bet you can't get any cheaper than that. I will show you the stethoscope if anyone thinks it is a toy i bought.
