In year term of grade 11, school classifies the grade as grade 12 now. Currently doing these subjects:

Standard English
General Mathematics
Business Studies
Biology
Modern History
PDHPE

I'm thinking of dropping 'General Mathematics' and have 10 units or drop 'Mathematics' and pick up 'History Extension' and have 11 units. General Mathematics in my school is doing really bad top mark for preliminary was 35/75, so even if I was to ace it in HSCs the scaling wouldn't be that good. So should I drop maths and stay with 10 units or pick up hist. ext. after dropping maths?

Aiming for 84 ATAR. Can I get that ATAR easily with these subjects?

To get an 84 ATAR the best thing to do is to drop Maths for sure and do History Extension. I do it and I find it really interesting and fun, but also easy enough to achieve good marks in.

Do what you enjoy. Do History over maths if you like that better. You can get 84 easily :)

Yeah I do enjoy history, though for preliminary exams in term 2 of grade 11 I didn't bother studying for anything so I got a poor mark for modern history; still passing. Though I'm not sure if my school is going to let me do Hist. ext.

Which presents the issue of having 12 units. It is always wise to have a backup 2 units, so if you can't do history extension, don't drop anything to begin with.

But I've always been doing bad in maths and my grade's general maths is horrible. Rank 1 received a 35/75 mark imagine the one-hundred and something other student's marks. It's pretty pointless staying and more importantly because I'm bad at it. Should I still hold on to the 12 units?

Your HSC is in 2014.
When I was finishing yr 11, I was on track for a high 90's ATAR with extension 1 and extension 2 English.
Things change, a lot.
I now do neither and on 11 units, that 1 extra unit will pull my ATAR up a few points probably.
Also, what you want to do after school also impacts... Eg. some courses require completion of a maths course.
