It's the Talented Students tute for MATH1241 (at least it looks like MATH1241); you can only enrol in it by emailing the School of Mathematics/Statistics, you can't enrol in it yourself. Hence having a zero capacity, so no one can enrol in it themselves.

Let's say I needed to enrol in MATH1241, otherwise I will not be able to do most of next year's math courses (according to the plan offered by UNSW). Can I ask for them to make room for me? Or will I have to wait till next year, semester two?

The way I see it (as far as I know), I can either:

a) Wait till our results come out, (and since I know a few people who will fail to achieve that required CR in MATH1141), then snatch a spot.
b) Wait till semester two, next year, all the while taking on Commerce courses until then. Then just all out maths.
c) Stick with and do 1251. Not really something I want to do.

Why can't you enrol into MATH1241 now? There are spots open, and if the reason is because they are crap times, UNSW doesn't give a crap about that - they do warn students that you may not get a timetable you will like. If this is the case, you should first enrol and then wait until just before next semester and see if anyone drops out or a space opens up in a time you prefer.

If your Commerce major/s doesn't require MATH1251, I strongly suggest you switch immediately to MATH1241.

I doubt they will make room for you if any tutorial class (except the Talented class) is still open. The tutorial rooms can only fit a certain number of students in them, 32 students in a room is pretty much full if it's a tutorial room in the Red Centre. If in fact there are no spots open, the argument can be made that since it's a core subject, you should be allowed to enrol into the course, but that's not a definite.

Your option B is also viable, but watch out if any of your commerce courses requires MATH1231/41/51 as a prerequisite. However, I think it would be better to be with the MATH cohort you enrolled in, mainly because of things like maths assignments in second year maths courses - you kind of want to be with people you know or at least have spoke with before.

Yea.. but no spots for Tutorial 2 of 2.

I'm pretty sure that when you enrol for this course, you need to select a lecture stream, then two of the tutorial streams (one from the 'Tutorial 1 of 2' and the other from 'Tutorial 2 of 2'). Correct me if I'm wrong?

But back to your previous post.

None of my Commerce courses requires math. Pretty sure...? (Planning to major in Finance.)

Only chose 1251, because second-year math requires AT LEAST 1241, and since 1251 'excludes' it, it counts as if I've done it? (Still new at this uni thing.)

But let's say I did contact/emailed them. What action would they even take? (not rhetorical). Would they create another class? Or would they ask some people to move to the Talented class? (seeing as the numbers don't exactly much up for the TUT1 Talented Class and TUT2 Talented Class). I guess what I'm asking is... will this be in vain? And if not, could you or anyone provide me an outcome that is likely to occur (or already has occurred in the past?)

They have made new classes before and they do sometimes increase space in a class (but to a certain point).

The Talented class is optional, maybe someone who is eligible to enter the Talented class feels another time slot works better for them.

It may be in vain, but there is really nothing to lose if you email them. You are better getting a straightforward answer from them than speculating what might happen. I think you would be more satisfied with that

True. But would you consider it too late to be contacting/emailing them on or after July 17th? The reason I ask is because that's the date when the results are given out.

I don't think it would make a difference. If you achieve above credit in what I presume to be MATH1151, then you will definitely have a case to argue if there are still no spots available.

Another question. It doesn't really specify that I need a CR to do MATH1241, as it only mentions MATH1131 and MATH1141. Seeing as it isn't officially in the handbook (to my knowledge), do I need a CR in MATH1151 to do MATH1241?

(I'm personally, not particularly worried about this, but I know a few people who are.)

It is not an option you have to carry on and take MATH1251 as MATH1151 is
not compatible with the other 1st year maths courses.

It is not an option you have to carry on and take MATH1251 as MATH1151 is
not compatible with the other 1st year maths courses.
