im a first year student studying bachelor of science at la trobe uni. im a bit worried that i may fail me biology genetics subject this semester? (keeping in mind that this bachelor of science course lets you choose what subjects you do that leads to a major in 3rd year. so no core subjects during 1st year).

what happens if you do and what are the circumtances?

Assuming you want to major in "biology genetics":

(a) It's offered in S1, take it then.
(b) You may be able to take it in S2 with 2 year subjects.
(b) If it isn't in S1 and you can't do 2000 level subs along with it without departmental permission, ask for a pre-req waiver so you can take 2 year subjects.
(c) If they don't give you a waiver you'll have to wait a year to take it again. Take a light load and enjoy some subjects you wouldn't normally be able to attempt.

Assuming you don't:
(a) Who cares, take another subject and take it again in S2 '09 if you really want to.

Are you sure they don't have core first year subjects? Normally you have to finish 12 CPs of 1000 level before you can do 2000 level. Check your handbook.

its really an elective subject. i need 120 credit points to pass first year.

You hope to god you'll still pass the course so you don't have to redo the course later.
