had no idea so i just guessed.

i said a communication protocol is a set of rules that govers how 2 computers communicate with eachother. An examples is HTTP. The protocol outlines how two computers are to communicate and how a web page is to be delivered.

i know i got it wrong, was taking a massive shot in the dark.

can anyone clear it up?

I thought that definition was pretty right. as for an example, I said handshaking because that's communications between the modem and isp.... not sure if it's right, but I think it is.

http - I don't think that's right because it's not really communications is it?!

A communication protocol is a set of rules taht govern the transfer of data. These define how the connection and transfer is established. I used POP as my example.

I think that's correct?

TCP/IP is your best bet (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

I can guarantee you are using it now - all comp's on the net use it

But others work (HTTP - yes)

Handshaking (maybe?? - it's choosing a protocol, so prob not (soz))

Overall, it is the rules that govern the transmission/transfer of data between 2 or more computers

Handshaking is the process whereby a protocol is agreed upon IIRC.

As for what is a protocol? I said it was the rules agreed upon during handshaking which govern the transmission of data between two devices. My example was X Modem.

I said the "protocol" definition...

A set of rules governing the transfer of ...
Ah I forget

used Xmodem or something as an example

thats what i defined it as.. a set of rules bla bla bla..
i used Internet Protocol (IP) as my example and outlined what it guarenteed and how it can be used in conjuction with TCP.

I said rules governing a communication link including speed of link, error detection/correct information, example FTP file transfer protocol for transferring files over a network

Did you guys study Xmodem/Ymodem/Zmodem alot before? I find it quite annoying that a specific thing which required memorising (there's no easy way to deduce things with that IMO) wasn't in the exam as a specific Q? I guess u can't win 'em all.

u basically had to write the definition of a protocol (set of rules that govern the exchange of data between computer devices) then give examples like http,ftp,smtp,tcp/ip,etc and just say what that example does for 3 marks... (well thats what i think)

with handshaking i dunno if thats a good example because protocols describe parameters such as handshaking, error checking etc.. but dunno if its an example of a protocol. u might be right though

protocols:

HTTP - hyper text transfer protocol
FTP - file transfer protocol
et cetera....

things that end in 'P' are generally protocols. look in your textbook

I don't think people actually said it was an example of the protocol but rather used it as a bit of 'adding padding' to the answer?
